I was wondering if anyone knew what their therapist did as a career before they became a therapist?

My current T used to be an elementary school resource or special needs teacher. Someone suggested she would be a good therapist. She explored it and got her PsyD. She has a grown autistic son at home, btw. I guess that's why she got into special education. Not sure.

PrevT said she was studying to be a geologist of some kind when she took a psychology class that turned her career toward her Ph.D.

Who knew?

The first one said she was a baker (I have no idea if that is true or not).
The second one still has her other career and did not become a therapist until midlife.

My T owned a bar abroad for some years. She did quite a few things before she settled for being a T.

Teaching assistant. Said that kids kept telling her things and she felt she couldn't help and wanted to.

Not another career, but sort of concurrent careers. Two of the three are educators who also taught courses while in practice. The third is a minister as well as a therapist.

My t worked in a bank and then owned a bar for a while. I think she should have stuck to her first two jobs!

My therapist was first a research scientist, then in corporate business, then studied social work and became a T.

Hmm, I dunno what (if anything) my t was before becoming a t. I know she got her psyd later in life, but she might have been a master's level t before that. I never thought to ask. She's good as a t, and I don't like to know too much about my t's...

My T was a T right from the beginning. All of her credentials and the timing indicate that psychotherapy was her thing all along.

My T worked in residential therapeutic communities straight out of uni. T1 did a number of other things including working in a bank and fitting hearing aids.

She trained as a teacher. She changed careers after being disappointed at how children with special needs were treated.

A lot of (in terms of what I would have expected) past bar owners - I find that fascinating.

Well my therapist is actually a psychiatrist. I'm not sure what she did before but in addition to running CBT part-time she is a forensic psychiatrist.

He was a part-time musician. I'm delighted his singer-songwriter career didn't work out, as he's an excellent full-time therapist.

At first my T was a very young drug addicted mom in an abusive relationship. After some years she got out of it and went to college to train to be a teacher. She went back and trained to be a therapist in her early forties.

She's a maverick, that t of mine. Yes, she was a train engineer for many years before becoming a t, she drove (do you say "drove" with trains?!) freight trains.
Thanks for this!
