Hey all.

I plan on ending therapy with my therapist on Wednesday. It will catch him off guard because I did not bring up anything about this recently. I was doing some thinking and realized that I am not getting anything out of it anymore. I have been going for years. The sessions consist of me ranting about my week which I could do with a friend and it takes me about 5 minutes to do this. Than, there is just silence 75 percent of the time. He ran out of questions, I ran out of responses and things to talk about...

Currently, I see it as a big waste of time + money. I am not getting anything out of it anymore and it is more of a chore and it ruins the break-up of my day when I go. I do not know how to bring it up because I know he will find a way to make me stay when realistically, I do not want to stay in therapy. He is a great therapist and a great guy but it doesn't do it for me anymore. I am better off without therapy. I am done with my anti-depressants and I am in a better place in life right now...

I wish you the best, Cycling. It's hard, this whole ending thing, I've tried to do it recently with my t, ended up taking a break, then I missed the relationship (I see now) and some stuff came up with my family and I went back. We talked about it more... and she said something like "certainly it's ok to stop when you've gotten everything you came for. But it could go on for you, for another 5, 10, 15 years.... you may still be in therapy on your deathbed." I am sure I looked at her in horror at that comment - I do not want to be in therapy for the rest of my life!!

Anyway I really wish you the best. Do let us know how it goes when you tell t.

I can understand why it's hard to bring it up unexpectedly after all these years. He should respect your decision. Let us know how it goes!
Thanks for this!

You can always cancel future appointments by email or phone if t gives you a hard time about stopping. I think for some people it is helpful to have a termination session, for some it is good to taper off, and for some it just makes sense to quit going. But that should be entirely up to you.
Thanks for this!
