I did ask if she ate something off the floor at school and she was like, "Yeah..." She's not the most reliable narrator (autism/language delay), but still... And she's gotten in trouble lately for putting stuff on floor in her mouth (think it's a sensory thing), even though she knows she's not supposed to. She's running around like her usual crazy self (I mean that in a loving way!) right now, so we'll see...

Hello couch. I seem to be entering some kind of existential crisis or something - major yuck. last night t and i were talking about it - like, how over the weekend doing my shamanic stuff I had this realization that my job is really not in line with my personal values. Not even really so much the actual what I do, but more, that I work for this huge company that makes ****-tons of money and claims to be "helping people live healthier lives". But they're just so obviously to me, in it for the ****-ton of money, they don't care one whit about their members or their employees actual well-being as long as they make their beaucoup bucks. I can't stand that. I can't. But what the hell else am I going to do with my life? How can I logically set about completely changing careers at my age? (I'm getting close to being 55). How can I feel so cavalierly about having a job when there are so many who don't but want to? Navajo rabbit!! I actually feel like calling t right now! I'm not going to of course, because I am halfway through my first (of several I'm sure) glasses of wine for the evening. And I asked for a meeting with my sup tomorrow to explain this. (I can talk to her, she's cool about listening and not running to management with every little thing.) I want to do something that actually helps people in a tangible way but I don't know what the hell that might be. It just really hit home on Saturday, because I was doing something for people in our shamanic arts healing clinic, and it felt good, it felt right, I felt so at home holding space for people by drumming for them. It was beautiful. I know that's not a job but y'know the others that trained with me, have actual jobs as like massage therapists and stuff like that, who help people in a real way every day, and yeah. I don't. I feel like I can put my own personal spin on my job and be present for each caller and show them empathy and handle their issue to the best of my ability and that's great; but at the end of the day, I go home knowing that I work for this huge company that is just about making money and that bothers me no end. Ugh. Thanks to anyone who read all the way through. I needed to get this out. I don't know what I'm asking for. Yes I do, anyone out there over 50 who has totally changed careers? How did you know what you wanted to do? I feel so lost at the prospect of changing careers because I have no idea what or how I would go about it. And h would have a hissy fit times 1000, because I make pretty decent money right now for where we live. I'm just not sure how happy I am anymore after this past weekend's experience. Is it cool to say navajo rabbit twice in one post?

Why don't you volunteer if you want to help people in a tangible way? (And I suspect you DO help callers in a tangible way.)
Lots of people have jobs that don't mesh with their values. They make up for it by being true to their values in other ways. But if you really want to change careers, be a therapist? |

Maybe volunteering more would be enough to calm this whatever it is. I dunno. I shouldn't post about this stuff while I'm drinking. sorry couchies.

Maybe if you found a company that in and of itself was more inline with really wanting to make their member's lives better ... thus tamper their "out of their arse" random call volume stats with member satisfaction and first call resolution... maybe it wouldn't be as bad. (oh yeah, I've done my spin on the phones... doing IT support, so I know all about metrics and such) |

I wrote the following joke that Schickele should use:
"The University of Southern North Dakota is one of only two colleges in America to offer a degree course in cattle rustling. The other, of course, is Princeton."
