I doubt he would ask , but I would go to a seminar or conference , but not social. EMDR T does exposure work in other places - he's not so much an " I sit here and you sit here " T , he's got quite a style which sounds weird but he nails it. I could do therapy in other venues though - the park and walking would be nice.

I don't think he would, and I would be kind of weirded out. His office is "safe space" so I feel comfortable about it. Outside of that--no, too strange for this agoraphobic.
We run into each other because we live in the same suburb and use the same supermarket. That's about the extent of it. |

No I wouldn't. That would be weird.

My T will never invite me for a social reason. She is very firm in her boundaries. BUT, once when her office wasn't available we were able to have session at my house. I can't tell you how much I loved that. I doubt it will ever happen again but it was a huge treat for me.

That would never happen.. lol Between me being weirded out and her boundaries, no way. It's for the best though. I need her to be my therapist.. anything beyond that would compromise our relationship.

The part of me that struggles with attachment would be so tempted at the opportunity to hang out socially with T, but the more rational part of me (which luckily is stronger these days) would say no and be concerned that my T would try to break boundaries that are good for me and my therapeutic experience.
I wouldn't like a change in venue of therapy, either, although I don't see anything unethical with that (unless it was somewhere public, where you could be overheard). I just personally would prefer to be in T's office. I can think of a couple exceptions, though -- for example, if I were in the hospital for a mental health-related reason, I would want to talk to my T right away and hope that she would agree to visit me and have a brief therapy session there.

Of course he'd never suggest that.
But "no" anyway. I have never met him outside his cabinet, and I'm afraid it'll happen one day. I'll probably run away. |

With my last T, I would. We were close in age and I related to him more as a peer/"friend" type of way, but maybe that's why that therapy relationship couldn't work out.

I'm a little surprised at all of the "no's" here. I've had my share of out of office sessions that were for therapeutic reasons. I often go on walks with Kashi during our sessions Once to help me with my directional/wayfinding anxieties we took the train into town and walked around. We did stop at a restaurant to grab a bite and that part felt like a strange bizzarro-world date. But nothing unethical just strange.
With my old long term t I only see him once a year and same things by either we walk or we go to the cafe across the street. He's no longer my main therapist but I see him when I visit my old home state. Old t sparky and I would go for walks or he was in my car for my driving phobia sessions. So my therapy has at times been pleasantly unconventional. |

I've seen my therapist, in passing, a few times outside her office. Her office is in the building next to where I work, and I've seen her walking around town. We say hi and smile but nothing more.
I don't see any reason to hold therapy elsewhere. She has a comfortable office and the thought of holding sessions out of it have never even occurred to me. If she had to move her business location, I wouldn't be bothered by that, because I know that she would also set a new location up to be a comfortable environment. The only thing she has ever offered is a phone session when I was going through a major crisis last year, but I declined because her office is one of the few places that I feel safe.

I wouldn't want to meet him outside our sessions now, but when I eventually finish therapy (if ever, lol) I want to meet up with him. I need to have the consistency with him, of being in exactly the same place, every week, with absolutely nothing different.

Highly depends on the type and level of therapy. When I was a young teenger I had a special kind of therapist that took me all sorts of places all the while listening to what was going on in my head. And some thetapists are supposed to come to you

No. While I'd love it, I know my T would never offer and it would be unethical.
I have grabbed starbucks with a dietitian at our last ever session before I moved out of the state (it was right by her office). We met at the office first, then walked over. I had another dietitian who would do things like help clients buy things at the grocery store or eat at a restaurant; I never needed it though. I think dietitians have a different kind of professional relationship than Ts though, and it makes sense for eating disorder treatment. |

If t wanted to meet outside of the office for a therapy session I would have no problem with that. I mean technically, we have when we visited the site of my trauma.
He has invited me to his church, on more than one occasion. Not specifically to hang out with him, but as a general invite him know I was looking for a new church.

This is very interesting topic me and my old therapist used to meet for coffee then go to office for therapy instead of me bring them a cup because they always changed their mind. It was like a 5 min walk they were helping with my full blown social anxiety and being with people in social setting because people scared the living daylights outta me even though I worked a very people oriented job I was having 3-6 anxiety attacks a day. To my colleagues I always looked outta breath or sweaty as though I was doing my job!

I had a psychiatrist a long time ago who came to me because I could not go to him. I overcame that anxiety and went to his home/office.
It would really depend on the situation and the need for me.

I have done a session with my therapist at the grocery store, but it wasn't for traditional therapy. I had just moved out on my own, and was clueless about cooking for just me/ what kind of stuff to get and would freeze up when I would try to do it on my own. I also had an appointment with her where about half the session was in the office, then we walked to the Starbucks (literally just across the parking lot), got a drink, and walked back to finish the session. I have seen her at church (we go to the same one) but don't talk to her there; we just kinda do the head nod thing.

My T would never suggest a meeting outside of therapy. Maybe someday it would be nice to take a walk around lake together and talk but now isn't a good time for that. We do EMDR almost every week and there is too much to work on.
Once I get through a lot of the stuff I'm working on and back off of sessions, I could see myself wanting to do a more laid back walking session but I don't know if T would go for it. It's a possibility I guess. |
