I was Googling around on how to break up with your therapist and found the New Yorker's take on it. Film is less than 5 minutes. And the therapist is wily.

You know how there are like huge warehouses where restaurants can buy their dishes and stuff?

Same for therapists' offices.

Is that not true?

(I mean, that's why I would go. )

I can accept though, that there might be other reasons.

Why do people go to Irish bars? To have sex with the Irish? Or to be Irish without people calling you a bog-hopping potato-muncher?

1. Counselling cannot change your orientation. It can only reveal what you already are

2. Point out that you are not going for sexuality counselling anyway. You're going for mental illness. There are very few good therapists in your area and you have to go where the good Ts are, wherever that may be.

Idk, I go to bars more often than not to get work done- admin tasks, writing, score study, etc. Something about the atmosphere and the ambient noise being louder than my head noise keeps me focused.

But I've gone as a more traditional bar patron too, never to hook up. Was truly not aware that was the primary purpose. Most people there just seem to want to watch whatever game is on tv.

It's the main reason I used to go. It appeared that there were other like minded people there.

My t went to bars to study when he was in grad school. Interesting place to get stuff done I think. Being as I am married I do not go to bars to hook up. I go to have fun with my friends. Though, I suppose singles might have different reasons.

I haven't been to a bar in years, but hook-ups were always at the forefront of my mind. I'd blame drunkenness for all of my bad relationships, except I met and married number 1 before I started drinking. I think going out to be around like-minded people is your right, (QM) I'm sorry he gives you grief about it.

There was a study-bar at my college (it opened my senior year and was a huuuuge deal because the town was semi-dry and only had just one small bar up to that point)

It was a very nice cafe which served wine and cocktails after 4:30pm in addition to its cafe drinks and pastries. There was single and group and bar-style seating, and big Central Perk-esque sofas. Tons of power strips too... I still miss it, nothing like that around here.

Call me old fashioned, but I go to bars to drink. Sometimes to get drunk, sometimes for the socialization aspect. Then again, I started dating my husband when I was 20, so I missed out entirely on the hookup scene.

A study bar sounds amazing though.

OK, you all have inspired me to change my profile photo. My name is actually from New Order (not Elvis), so may as well go with an album cover.

As for bars, I think it depends on how you define "bar." I mean, we were just at a brewpub/restaurant with our daughter and certainly weren't looking for a hookup there!

"Langbein" means "long leg". (The English equivalent is "Longshanks".)
