Two. The first one was only for about 3-4 months back when I was in college (early 90s). She was wonderful and we were getting somewhere. Then my school decided they were no longer going to find the program. She didn't accept my insurance and I just couldn't afford it.

I never saw another person until cutting T about 8 or 9 years ago.

Thought of seeing another T for emdr.. I saw her once and it was a nightmare.

10-15ish since Feb 2007? 3 long term (all in different cities or I'd never have stopped seeing the other 2), 5 for a few months for specific issues (first T/PhD student, T when I moved, T at grad school counseling center, student T at grad school, and the dude), then several others for only 2-3 sessions. Oh, also had a group T who worked at same office of long term T 2 and my dietitian- saw her for at least a year. I have also had multiple gaps of up to 2 years at a time without a T, so it hasn't been back to back therapy.

Hopefully my 2 previous long term Ts and current long term T are the only ones I need now. If I need to move around for my career or life, I would only live in one of the 3 cities I have friend networks in and I have one of them in each city.

Three. 2 as a teenager/young adult:

T1 was an LPC that I saw starting my junior year of high school, stopped seeing her my senior year when she unethically terminated.

T2 was a Bill Nye lookalike LCSW I saw for 2 years after I graduated high school. Not a bad dude, but wasn't really helpful.

T3, aka roboT, is my current T, an LCSW. Been seeing him since last November, so 8 months now. RoboT is my spirit animal / dad / what I want to be when I grow up.

A lot. But only 2 good ones. One of them is retired and the other one gave up private practice and moved out of state.
Once again I'm on the search for a good T.

In my late 20s I attended for one support group meeting a group for adult children of dysfunctional families. I thought I had gone through hell but the stories others related were terrifying in comparison. I felt like **** and never went back.

In my early 40s I contacted by phone a counsellor from my EAP for 3 phone sessions regarding the work related depression and stress.

At 44 I went to one marriage counselling session. That counsellor stopped it midway when it was evident my husband refused to participate or accept his responsibility for the state of the marriage. He basically mocked and threatened her.

I undertook a CBT program conducted by a psychiatrist. The closest thing to therapy I have had has been what small talk occurs in my psychiatrist's office.

From 1983 till now? 5 long term Ts from 2-3 years to 7 years but there were others inbetween that I saw once or twice before deciding it won't work. Plus there were times I worked with Ts from IOP for up to 6 months or longer but I don't count them cause they weren't really my T they were part of a package deal and I never really got very close.

For individual therapy/talks: about 6
But when you have group therapy and especially intensive (more days a week) therapy, then you have to do with more T's. So you can add about at least 10 more.

6 or 7 that I can remember..
Among them I had 2 christians (my mom wanted me to heal through God); the first one was quite dull, she was completely cold and apathetic, her sessions were painful. The other was a very humble therapist who was also a pastor: one of the smartest, wisest people I've ever met in my life. NO religious nonsense, his approach was mostly meaningful conversations with deep words. Unfortunately, he lives far away back in my country

I believe that we need to find the person who 1) will help us; 2)makes us comfortable. Therapy is really important and good for everyone, not only for people like us, suffering from disorders. It doesn't matter if you had 16 or 6000 therapists or doctors, you have to keep searching for the right one, the one that you are going to be looking forward to see.

Best wishes
