I started watching "Gypsy" on Netflix, mostly because it's about a therapist.I'm only on episode 2 so far because it's s-l-o-w moving and kind of b-o-r-i-n-g.But I plan on watching the whole season,it's interesting to me to see the life of a therapist.

Spolier alert:

In the second episode, the MH professionals are sitting around a table discussing a client. That was disturbing to me.Do they really do that?

This show gives me anxiety. It seems everything this therapist does is unethical.

Anyone else watching this?

I haven't seen that particular show, but I have come to the conclusion that every fictional show or movie about therapy is going to be inherently unrealistic, often because the therapist is cartoonishly inept or unethical. But then a show about actual therapy would be so slow and boring that nobody would want to watch: "I need to talk about my mother. Again." *click*

I started watching it yesterday. I left off mid-episode 4. I am kind of (ok totally) getting into it - Not sure if it's because Naomi Watts plays the t so well, or the below, but I am liking it. I wonder if it's based on a book. It also makes me want to write a story about therapy.

spoiler alert

or maybe because the therapist has some major issues of her own. i keep waiting for her to go talk to her own t but so far she hasn't. oh to be a fly on the wall in one of HER own sessions! Man is she messed up. And I think well-played by Naomi Watts.

I just started watching it too. I keep drawing comparisons bw this character and my T. So far, none of the character's red flag behaviours have shown up in my T. But I find the character appalling, and deeply disturbed and unethical - and just a ****** person - regardless of her profession. Will keep watching in hopes of redemption.

Glad to hear you're into it.I thought the first espisode was so slow moving, hopefully it gets better each episode.I wish I had the time to binge watch it but I am so busy this weekend I am watching a few minutes here and there when I get time.

Hopefully I will find time to catch up with you, episode 4...

I have been comparing too,no similarities yet.

She seems very detached to me,almost like she's a bit robotic or something, like eventually the real her is going to pop out and go postal.

I agree, RubyRae. It's like she's got no intuition or humanity. If I wasn't already in therapy, this would definitely turn me off.

I have enjoyed it, though agreed that she definitely seems detached and also is royally screwed up on her own. There are human moments of her as a T that I do like. I also am glad i do not recognize my T in her

I also agree a real show about therapy would be boring as he11.

A real show about any profession would be boring as hell.
And since I believe therapists are royally ****ed up human beings - I don't see this show as being all that much fiction.

I read an interview with the writer whose sister is a CBT therapist and provided advice on therapy related language.

I don't want to watch it because of the boundary violating things and because it's called psychosexual drama. I don't want anything like that in my head.

I managed to finish episodes 2 and 3 and now I'm hooked.I'm wondering wth is all this leading up to.Even wondering if maybe she has multiple personalities or something?IDK but I'm very into it now.

Now I want to keep watching even after people come over for a cookout we're having this evening. While they're on FB I will just watch what I can when I can and I doubt anyone will even notice.

I haven't finished either, have like 2 episodes to go.I just don't feel as interested in it as I usually am,I think because this whole season is about the riot going on.It feels like they're dragging it out too far.And it seems so unrealistic,a real prison riot is going to end right away, they would go in and kill all the prisoners if they had to,they're not going to care about saving their lives, especially with guards as hostages. And they sure wouldn't be able to sunbathe in the yard and all the other stuff they're doing.

I'm disappointed in this season after waiting so long for it.

I saw an ad on Netflix the other night for it, but passed... it sounded like the main premise was that the therapist was having a lot of inappropriate relationships with people connected to her clients? I thought it sounded a bit... icky.

Have you checked out "In Treatment"? It was done by HBO, and is on Amazon now (you can watch for free if you have Prime - I watched a bunch with a prime one-month trial). I thought that one was interesting, though I got a bit bored in season 2.

You see 4 of his clients in sessions with him (the therapist) - one per episode, then you see him in session with his own therapist. During some episodes, you catch glimpses of his family life as well.

That fascinated me. It's sort of like the show that I wished existed when I first started therapy, and didn't understand what to do. It's interesting to see what things are in common among the patients... how *everybody* argues and is defensive in therapy, including the therapist in his own therapy. It's interesting to see how he can be such a good therapist, but so screwed up in his own therapy. And it's interesting to see his family stuff (which isn't going so well). I think it's worth checking out, if you like that sort of thing.
Thanks for this!

I am fed up with the riot on OITNB, I thought it would only be 2 episodes but ten episodes in and it's still happening.
Just watching Gypsy now, she is a horrible therapist. I would never go to her! Especially with the old lady and she was writing in her notepad boundaries over and over!

I liked in treatment -but I thought Paul was an absolutely horrible horrible therapist. I probably would've walked out halfway through the first appointment with him. I usually just watched the ones with Gina because I so despised watching Paul with his clients

Sesame Street did a REALLY cute skit on healthy eating that was called "Orange is the new SNACK". Instead of cookies. It was hilarious.
