My long term T has only had a psychology today profile. I have been seeing her for about 10 years. I would have never contacted her based on that...it is so generic and says nothing about het plus she does not have a picture.

There was a therapy group mentioned in the local newspaper. I ended up looking the place up and ended up with an individual t there. I have yet to go to the group.

I put "Other" - I can't remember if I first found her on the Psychology Today website, or if I found her website via Google first. I've used both to try to find therapists...

I don't mind if they have a profile on PT - but I really, really prefer it when they also have their own website. It gives a bit more space for them to talk about their approach, training, etc. and thus, makes it a little easier to get an idea of whether I want to meet with them.

I mentioned this to old T once, who told me that he thinks it's "lazy" when they don't bother to put up a website of their own!

Whoa! Doesn't that just scream, "I don't really want to be a therapist, it's my day gig while I pursue my dreams in music"?! I wonder if that T gave any thought at all to the message she's sending?

Probably should be a whole other subject! I'm struggling a little, because I want to try neurofeedback... there's someone that my T has recommended, but looking at his site, it looks like he employs his daughter at his business. That's just such an unprofessional sign to me, I haven't been able to get past it to call him!

I’ve had 4 Ts in my adult life, all of whom I found on psychology today except for one, who was my then-boyfriend’s therapist. I didn’t like the way my T at the time was doing therapy, and his T was great and he was ending therapy soon anyway, so I switched to her and never looked back.

I got very lucky with my T. I got on to google maps and searched for a counselor near where I work. Then I checked my insurance to make sure she was in-network, and booked my first appointment. The process was very unlike how I usually choose a provider. I didn't do any research, I knew nothing about her, and I even forgot her name at first. Crazy! She has turned out to be pretty great and she's the first therapist I ever felt any kind of connection with. It wasn't until later that I started looking at her website and learning more about her.

My previous T, who terminated me, gave me my current T's number as a referral. I would never have guessed that the T who wasn't a good fit would refer me to a T who is the best fit that I ever could have imagined. PreviousT also referred me to another T, and I was able to rule him out by the message he left me.

The institute thing you did sounds like a good idea, though I'm not actually too picky on therapy type. I've tried finding people through membership in other types of relevant organizations (like the International Society for the Study of Trauma), but haven't had any luck finding local results.
I don't mean to imply that therapists need to be excluded simply because they have a profile on Psychology Today. There's nothing inherently wrong with having a profile on Psychology Today. I've just never liked any of the profiles I've seen on there...

I have pretty much always gone through the public healh system.

With my current t I thought I was initially getting a 'girl' but got 'boy' instead :P

He is who you see when nothing else works. He deals with complex cases. Mine is certainly that...

A friend recommended my T. Most of my T's business is now by referral -- I myself have recommended him to 2 friends who have also started seeing him. When you find a T through a personal referral it does sometimes mean you know other clients-- I think I know 7 people total who have seen him or are seeing him.

My first psychiatrist kept trying to get me to see a therapist, and after a year and a half I finally agreed, and he said he knew someone that would be a good fit for me.
