So I am going to email my T and ask her for a list of referrals (which she said I am welcome to do) and I will also just clarify what is going to happen with my file. I’m sure those things are fine to email about but I also want to ask her why she is closing her practice.
It caught me really off guard at our last session and I didn’t think to ask then. I had it in my mind that I could just come back after my break so I had not planned on that being our last session EVER. It also seemed like T wasn’t going to even tell me about it because she only mentioned it when I asked if I could come back and see her instead of one of her referrals. I feel quite upset and abandoned from all this. The other part of it is I’m concerned about T and keep worrying about all the possible reasons for her closing her practice. I know it’s not really any of my business but do you think it would be okay to ask? |

I think it's ok to ask, but that doesn't mean she will necessarily give you an answer.

Since you don't plan to go back, no harm in asking. Probably she won't tell you-I would think if she wanted the reason to be public she would have said something when she told you she was closing.
Maybe first ask for referrals and about your file. Then when you have that figured out, ask why the closure. That way it won't get in the way of you getting what you want from her. |

I also think it's okay to ask. And, yes, she's obligated to give you referrals. I wouldn't worry about that part.

I got a reply earlier today and got some referrals and also clarified the stuff about my file so that was fine. I asked T why she was closing her practice. I said that I know its not any of my business but that I had been worried about all the possible reasons behind the closure and was having trouble processing it.
This was the response: I'm sorry to hear that you have been worried about the reasons for my closure. There is no need to be concerned. Regardless of the reasons though, finishing up is difficult and understandably so given the long journey it has been. You have achieved much in our time together and I think that is something to be pleased about. I am confident that you will find another therapist who will be able to see you through the next stage of your growth and personal development. So I didn't get an answer but it was a nice response at least. |
