So it’s been about two months since a finished up with my previous T and I’ve decided that I want get back to working on stuff. I’ve always seen female Ts but this time I have decided to see a male. I had pretty intense maternal transference with last T and I think that interfered with the dynamic in an unproductive way. I’m nervous about seeing a man but curious to see what the differences are. The appointment is scheduled for Feb 12

I found a male T for my husband and I to see as a couples therapist, because I thought my husband would be more comfortable, and also on the recommendation of a friend of mine. A few months in, I started also seeing him individually to work on self-esteem issues. Had I not already known this T, I would never in a million years have chosen a male T to see individually (sorry if that is offensive, but it would have felt simply pragmatic to me, as the odds of a good connection with a woman would have seemed so much more probable).

And yet I think my T is excellent and it's been very productive and healing to see him. So, I can both understand having misgivings or worries, and I can also say I've been unexpectedly happy with a male T.

I've experienced a negative transference that had to do with mistreatment from men in the earlier part of my life, and it was very useful to explore and work through, and I'm not sure this would have happened with a female T. So there is also that.

Good luck to you.

Thanks everyone for your replies .

This new T is mainly psychoanalytic/psychodynamic but draws on CBT, IPT and Mindfulness when appropriate.

I have never had an negative experiences with men; my relationship with my Dad is good but not emotionally close really. I've not had a lot close relationships with men at all to be honest so this will be very interesting.

This is also probably the first time that I have started with a new T while I'm not feeling completely terrible and considering therapy as a "last resort". I think it will be good to start things off not a complete mess haha.
