My T recently consulted about my case with another T in her practice who does EMDR. EMDR T said that she thought EMDR could be helpful for me. I am not sure that my background includes trauma in the conventional sense, although I admit that I am often quick to minimize things that have happened to me. My T (who specializes in trauma, among other things) said there are some similar elements there, and she quickly ran through a list of specific "flashbulb" memories I have shared that could be good candidates for EMDR. I was started to feel upset hearing them all in a row like that, so maybe she's onto something. I don't have PTSD, but I do have a history of depression/persistent depressive disorder and anxiety.
Anyway, I know folks on here have widely varying opinions of EMDR. Is it worth trying? Are there people who have attempted EMDR and did not specifically fall into a trauma or PTSD category? I am curious about adding another treatment option to help me get to where I want to be, but I admit I am a bit skeptical. |

I haven't tried EMDR but my flashbulb memories WERE associated with dissociated feelings that came up through regular talk therapy with a trauma and dissociation specialist.

i did try EMDR with non-trauma, sort of like you, and it didn't work well for me. my EMDR T showed me a chart of symptoms of trauma, and i had like 99% of those symptoms, but i told her that everyone feels those things at times...so i don't know. Anyway, i found it difficult because I didn't really have these traumatic memories to try and "resolve," so it didn't go anywhere for me. That being said, I do know it has been shown to help for depression. My current T has mentioned EMDR to me when I was a witness at a rally here last August that ended up with someone murdererd, and then once again when i hit another car a few weeks ago. I turned her down, but I can see her reasoning. |

There are lots of things EMDR is used for - I do well with it. Flashbulb or flashback memories are things coming from the past and still being troubling. You could give it a go or talk to the T maybe ?

I was going to try EMDR but I can't seem to find an ethical therapist who can provide safety...
Did those of you who did EMDR work with your therapists for a long time before doing it?

I specifically started seeing Emdr T for that purpose O already had/have a long term talk therapist. But I was stuck woth my Ptsd so we decided to try something different. EMSR t and I started on my second appointment. It has been difficult because of my trust issues. She came bery highly recommended by my pdoc. She is a wonderful T and is very patient it it is hard.

How can you tell they are ethical or not from reading their profile? Or did you do interview a few of them?

Looking for safety, protection, being cherished and loved can often be normal unmet needs in childhood, and the survivor searches for these in other adults. This can be where survivors search for mother and father figures. Transference issues in counseling can occur and this is normal for childhood abuse survivors. |
