So I think sometimes it can be hard to know what "good enough" parenting even looks like if you didn't get it.

Everybody else thinks my parents are great, but that's because the worst stuff happened primarily at home. I also suspect my brother and I had different experiences/interpretations of our childhoods, but I'm not nearly close enough with him to talk about this kind of thing. I sincerely doubt he could hear or validate my experience anyway.
According to Jonice Webb, emotional neglect even without emotional abuse can cause so much suffering in it's own. Pete Walker writes that his C-PTSD clients who "only" (clients' words) experience emotional neglect have the hardest time validating the barren wasteland of their upbringing.

I thought emotionally absent parents was the norm too. And with emotionally abusive parents, many of them are well liked, many friends etc. My father would be a loving father figure to children from single parent families at church. And be a father who'd call my siblings and me names and beat us brutally.

Plus yeah, my younger brother has a vastly different childhood from me from what little I remember. Not close enough to talk about it too. I remember reading some personal accounts from adults with many siblings (Homeschooler's Anonymous) who describe how their parents mellowed and got more nurturing and supportive and that some younger siblings essentially had completely different parents.

It took my older sister years to quit saying "It didn't happen to me (because she'd moved out!!) so it couldn't have happened to you. I don't believe you." I had to go no contact with her for a year after setting some boundaries and conditions because she was regularly triggering me in big ways.

Even if your brother might not validate you, the CEN forum here and this forum are supportive. And I definitely believe that emotional neglect and emotional abuse isn't something any child deserves.

My new version of Tapatalk lost its easy multi-quote capabilities ugh.

@@ the phone call is preferable to the piercing scream, which I woke up to many nights in the past. It does call into question her lack of foresight, but apparently it was a somewhat emergent situation. I would have made sure there was adequate amounts of paper before I started, which I guess I learned through experience?

RR, she's almost an adult but you're right, the phone is an extension of the hands, and the subject of many arguments at the dinner table. I've made a new rule, technology-free meals. We never had that problem when I was a kid, no cell phones or tablets existed. My parents used to ban toys and books at the table, but my sister and I still managed to ruin things by fighting.

This conversation is so enlightening!

Tangentially related (to youth, laziness and burdening other people): When I was a kid, we didn't have tv with a remote (too poor). One day, my siblings got into a power struggle about who would change the channel, so they ended up calling neighbors from up the street to hurry over. When the neighbor got there, the sibs begged them to change the channel. They wouldn't budge to do it themselves, but one of them had to have gotten off their butts to get to the phone. The neighbor was Pissed. Off.

omg that was so my sister!! they joke about it now but it caused some contention when we were younger. we didn't have a remote either (it was the 60's/early 70's after all) and my sister would call me or my brother into the familyroom from the other end of the house, and then we'd get there and say "What?" And she'd say "change the channel for me." My brother never did and they'd yell at each other, but I always would lol

I wrote and posted my 2nd class discussion post last night, this one was analyzing one of the short stories in chapter 4 of our textbook and discussing the uses of characterization. I have one more post to go before tomorrow night at midnight, it's got to be 600-1000 words, a scene where one character tries to convince another character of something. i have an idea in mind, but have not started it yet (!) h and i are going grocery shopping now, so I suppose I'm waiting until we get the shopping out of the way then when we get home i'll start laundry and put on a pot of lentils, then start writing.

i'm just so relieved that i resolved my struggling of this past week, i feeeeeel a lightness of being right now that is almost like a high. it's rather weird.

I don't know -- what if the apocalypse or a natural disaster hits when one is in the loo at 3am? Taking the phone in is forward-thinking, I say.

Having said that, I am also in awe of your kid's ability to --
a. Remember to pick up the phone at 3am
b. Check it in the loo at 3am

I'd consider myself lucky if I am awake and aware enough at 3am to basically not let go as I stumble to the loo, really.

Shopping for the week almost complete.

I just realized something. Duh. Writing stories is another way to practice arguing, breaking up, setting boundaries, etc. All the things I do in therapy, pretty much, and have learned, I can continue to practice through characters in stories! OMG total duh, Artie!!!!!

(I see you over there chuckling, @@.)

I signed up for the local library’s summer reading challenge and one optional task is “read for ten minutes to your pet.”

So I have just read to them from my current book on the Greek financial crisis. New cat wandered in and out. Junior cat settled down for a nap.

Maybe they would have enjoyed Moby D i c k more. It has fish, after all.

I'm sure if I read to Tigger, she'll decide to try and chew on the library book

You cant just assume your special pets are going to like EVERYTHING you like, ya know. Different beings bring different tastes into their relationships. Try reading "The Notebook" :rapt:

Lol, that or he'd probably love to hear a recipe for seafood, though not sure cookbooks are what your library had in mind for reading material.

And i am still achy today. I think i also got too much sun yesterday, i was hot all night. Im having some pedialyte now. I havent had coffee yet cuz my stove is the dumping ground after grocery shopping and i just now got it cleaned off. Good news is, still under weight watchers points, got a load of laundry in, and my spare underroos are fitting a little better already! Oh and my haircut turned out pretty cute yesterday. I told her Sassoon, she looked it up on her ipad (i had to spell it for her), and we are heading that way. She is the gosling of hairdressers! So talented.

I hope you are less achy soon. I should retry Weight Watchers.

What sort of conundrum would it create to find your cats were fans of harlequin romance or star wars fan fiction rather than Melville or Ovid.
That my own wander off or sleep during my orations from Austen or H.D. or even Jeanette Winterson but perk up for Seuss is painful. They even failed to respond appropriately to Miss Furr and Miss Skeen. Furr is right there in the title I kept telling them.

So I just finished writing my 'scene', where one character tries to convince another character of something. I've never done a writing workshop before, so I'm a little nervous about posting it to our group. There are 7 of us in our 'workshopping' group that will read each other's work and then post constructive feedback for each other. I don't know if I mentioned this yet. The way this online class is set up, is that you can't view anybody else's posts until you've already done your own! I'm not sure how I feel about that! On one hand, I hate it, because in my previous two classes I always looked at other posts before I did mine, to see how much mine sucked in comparison. I can't do that now. On the other hand, it forces me to have a little more confidence in my own work, to just PUT IT OUT THERE without knowing how other people did first.

Here goes nothing.... haha

I havent been able to decide for almost the last half of my life between right part and left part. Ive been doing right part i think since some time in my thirties. I even googled it, and youre supposed to part on your "prettier" side, however you define it. Then you expose it, while draping your hair over and covering your Mr Hyde half

Well, she fixed it with a left part, and we talked about it a little, and at least she knew what i was talking about! Other hairdressers have either played dumb or really didnt know, which i seriously doubt.

So today i decided i like my left cheek better than my right cheek. The left plane of my face is straighter, like an oblong face, whereas the right plane sort of meanders out, like a heart shaped face.

This is important because usually whenever i happen to glance in the mirror, i really dont like what i see, and that does not help my self-esteem or my identity or my ability to take care of myself.

And i think the coffee finally alleviated my achinesses. Hallelujah.

Lunatic dog peed on my face and arm. I am so done...

My biggest bruise from him is starting to hurt less, but still looks ghastly.

Edit: That is my thigh pointed upwards.
