I want to see a therapist without my family knowing about it- at least for a while. But I’m 18, no license, no car of my own, and live with my grandmother. She can be ignorant when it comes to my mental health already. Just tells me to grow up. I’m scared to ask. She gets obsessive and will definitely keep asking what the therapist and i talked about.
I’m back in college in 2 months and getting therapy would be easier. But I feel like I need it ASAP. I’m so tired of feeling like this. Its been years and only worsened over time. |

Online therapy sounds like the best option in your situation.

I'm guessing at 18 you probably don't have the money to pay for online therapy. I know I didn't! In any case, you are most likely not on your own insurance plan, so someone would find out if you started seeing a therapist and they filed insurance. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what to suggest. It seems unlikely that you'll be able to find a way to start seeing a therapist secretly before starting college in the fall. I understand the urgency you feel, I really do - but might you be able to hold out a couple more months? Then as soon as you get to college, make an appointment with the counseling center? You could probably even call ahead of time and make one in advance. In the meantime, perhaps you could consult with a GP and get on an antidepressant or something.

I really donÂ’t have the money unfortunately aha. IÂ’m the average broke college student. I didnÂ’t think about talking to my GP. IÂ’ll try and mention it. Hopefully I donÂ’t choke up. IÂ’m not very good at opening myself up like that.. it feels really vulnerable and i get embarrassed *sigh*. Kinda the reason I was scared of getting therapy.

I think as far I can know online therapy or college counseling are your best options. Re:Your grandmother grandmother asking what you and your therapist discussed. Psychotherapy is considered private. Your grandmother doesn't need to know. Okay I d don't know how you feel about your relative knowing what's going on with your psychotherapy. You are not obligated to tell her. Possible to assert yourself?
