Couch mini-poll: is it normal for you and/or your therapist in session to get out your phone to check a fact or look up something related to the discussion?

I’m the one who first did it, several times now, but last time Piaf got in on the act to find the title of a Vonnegut short story one of my stories reminded her of.

I would just like to know someone else does it.
Thanks for this!

I've done it, but I don't think T brings his phone in the room.

I don't think I've had a therapist do that.

I've done that outside of session, then reported back to the T, but not within session.

I have not. It's just never occurred to me. But this may be helpful next time we argue about something. Google could tell us who's right.

To check facts? Blondie — no. But, she has popped out her phone for other things (to show me stuff, get me some info etc).

Me — yes, to check facts. But, very rarely — it’s kinda awkward-er than usual to sit around waiting for a page to load.

Btw, this reminds me, I’ve been meaning to ask — Piaf gave you a whole bunch of German writers but when it came to her own countrymen, she only gave you Maupassant if I remember right (who I remember reading a whole lot of as a child — pretty famous in the motherland along with O.Henry) but not the much much better writer (in my utterly useless opinion) Colette?
Thanks for this!

Ex-t and I both did that at different times. Her phone wasn't usually present, she'd have to get up and go get it out of the closet, mine would be in my purse but yeah we each got our phones out to look something up from time to time. One particular session I recall we were sitting in companionable silence just "be-ing" when we both heard her phone vibrating in the closet lol. I was grateful that she ignored it.

I just wrote up a script for myself to use when I call ex-t tomorrow to ask her to email me my sand tray pictures. I have done that for the last several times I've called her about something. Without a script I let her distract me too much.

She went to university in Germany, which I assume is where she picked all those up.

Besides Maupassant the only French literature she mentions (several times so far) is 17th-century French drama.

I’ve never read Colette. Though I’ve heard “there are no ordinary cats.”

Both of my Ts have done it, but I think they are following my lead; it's not uncommon for me to look up things during sessions.

Yes. EX T and I looked stuff up on our phones especially when I was in DBT group at another practice. EX-T at the time was not trained in DBT so she had to look up stuff when I brought it up in session. Also a few years ago I was sick over a period of 6 months and lost a bunch of weight so she resorted to Dr. Google in session to understand what was happening to me back then.

Neither I nor my T have ever gotten our phones out during session except for scheduling.

T and I have both done it, but only when it directly has something to do with what we are discussing in session.

Yes, we both do that. I have my laptop and she either uses her phone or goes to her computer. It's a lot more efficient than jotting something down to remember to look up later, and then have to follow up about it.

I don't think either of us looked anything up.

I bought a cantaloupe yesterday and just tried it now. Mediocre melon is so disappointing.

I don’t think we’ve ever gotten our phones out during a session. She uses hers as a timer to remind us when to end; otherwise, I think we might talk for way too long. I get mine out at the end to schedule. That’s about it.

My legs hurt! Can't sleep so I'll chime in here. T doesn't get out her phone unless it's to send me a link to look at after the session. Occasionally. But I show her photos or last time a video I made with a friend. Not to look up facts though.
I'm supposed to see her tomorrow but if I'm up all night I may have to cancel or do phone session. I'm exhausted but my legs hurt when they touch bed. Took Tylenol at 1a.m. Melatonin usually works. It just made me tired. Savella isn't helping yet.

I'm making a list of places to go with my sister when I get back. So far we have China town, the Imperial war museum and Kenwood house. Think I've had enough of therapy to go to the Freud museum, but I'd go just to get a photo of THE original couch. xD

I'm booking tickets to the aquarium Sea life and London dungeons, as it's cheaper to book together as they're owned by the same company.
