My therapist has welled up with tears in her eyes the second time in therapy today...when I told her about the trauma that I am experiencing. I think she is such a caring therapist who has lots of empathy.

My T and my ex-T do that from time to time too. I am not sure how I feel about it. It unnerves me a bit I think. Perhaps because I downplay my own abuse and I think she should harden up a bit!
How do you feel about it when your t does it? |

I am okay of my T tearing up, when hearing about my trauma. It just shows how caring she is, so much that she cannot hide. About you downplaying your own abuse, I also can relate to you, because I was not as emotional as my T.

I know people have different feelings about T's doing this - I have seen my T moved but I downplay what's happened to me too , so then I can see perhaps a more realistic response that I can see it for what it is , feel it and heal.

On my first session with T, I could definitely tell she was doing her best to hold back tears, upon telling me about our common experience. It made me feel really bad for her, and I found it harder to bring that topic up. I told her about how her reaction made me hold back my own feelings and she said that I shouldn't be worried about talking to her about this. She empathized with my situation and that brought us closer.

Two of my past Ts have teared up during session. It made me feel very cared for. I think if they had full-on cried I would have been a bit put off though.

Mine has teared up on occasion too. I've found that it helps me access my own emotion sometimes.

Mine did once after a tough time when she was worried for me. I liked it.

I would be appalled. Nothing in my life warrants tears, certainly not mine...and most definitely not my T's.

Thankfully it's never happened. I don't tend to believe in tears as a demonstration of empathy. I generally believe that tears come from an internal recognition of an emotion, sometimes as the result of an external prompt to memory; but that the tears express the emotion about the self, not about the other. So if my T were to cry (I can't even imagine, sob) I would be more likely to question their stability, and that would be a negative indication to me. Emotionally, I think it would even leave me feeling unseen--as now the T is wrapped up in their own emotion.

One of mine teared up. I was never same after that. It's what provoked my fixation on her. Dangerous territory in my opinion, because could open up a bottomless pit of unmet needs that a therapist is not in a position to gratify. I prefer to have this sort of experience with someone that is actually part of my life, not a hired hand.
