I had one of those sessions the other day when I just didn't feel like I had much to say. Does that ever happen to anyone else.

It hasn’t happened to me. I plan beforehand what I want to talk about, and something always comes to mind, maybe something from my teenage years.

I am paying big bucks to entertain my captive audience (therapist).
I always find something to say. |

I might have gone into a session without an agenda, (in fact, I almost always went into session not having a plan on what I wanted to talk about), but I never had a session that was silent for very long. Somehow we always arrived at what I really needed to discuss. My therapists were very good at helping me get there.

When it happens (which is rare because I guess I have lots of issues, and I like to gab), I usually say something like, "Sooo...today I got nothing so it's a good time for you to ask me something you're curious about." Because he usually lets me direct conversation, and rarely asks questions, unless it's to clarify something. I actually don't remember if he asks me anything substantive, but that's usually enough to get things flowing.

The therapist was terribly useless at helping find things to talk about. There was silence or talk about dogs. I never knew what was supposed to be talked about that was supposed to help. I found it all quite frustrating.

Yes, that has happened to me before. Former T would take the light approach on days like that and we would stick to topics like work, or school. It hasn't happened yet with current T but when it does, I really like arielawhile's approach and might try that in the future! HUGS Kit

If I'm anxious or depressed and don't know what to talk about, I tell that to my T and she usually says I should just say anything that comes up for me. After that, if I still don't have anything to say, I just sit there and sigh a lot.

My ex-t is certified in sand play so if I didn't have anything to talk about, I'd do a sand tray. Then we'd talk about that. Or one time she got out some play dough, another time I drew with pastels.
