I’ve been so exhausted that I feel like I need a few weeks of a break from therapy before I go back. Being under so much stress now with the Covid pandemic makes it hard. It’s even more exhausting spending the entire session in a mask. It’s so distracting.

I actually find it’s quite common for the sessions where I really didn’t want to go to be some of the most powerful and productive. The past couple of weeks I’ve nearly cancelled and did not feel like talking at all when I got there as I was just so fed up of everything, but they turned out to be some of the most insightful and useful sessions I’ve had.
I’m beginning to realise for therapy to truly work you have to force yourself to turn up and do the work even when you don’t feel like it.

I let my T know either before the session or first thing in session that I don’t want to be there. Then we are able to adjust to what my current need is together.

If I know I look like ****, or what I see hurts me..then I find it very hard to look in the mirror.

Are there any benefits of a short break? Like maybe 3-4 weeks off? Could it help with increased motivation? My T is pushing me hard and it’s causing me increased anxiety because I don’t have the energy that I feel he is expecting of me.

I don't know if there are benefits of breaks, especially if it is to avoid the hard stuff. The hard stuff is the only way through, I think.
This week I did not want to go the most I have ever not wanted to go. I thought I wasn't going to go right up til half an hour before hand, and then I nearly turned and walked away once I reached the door.
It turned out that we had a massive breakthrough. A truly massive and totally unexpected one.
And to think - I could have been sitting at home feeling worthless and hopeless instead.

I think it is the hardest to go when the going gets hard... but that is also when it is most important.
Thanks for this!

I never found it useful to go when I did not want to do so. I found breaks quite useful

I almost always go when I don't feel like it and I am always happy I did. It seems like those sessions we were able to get deeper or something.

Thanks to everyone for the responses. It helped to motivate me to go this past week and I’m so glad that I did.
