I am definitely feeling okay about cancelling T tonight. Of course, I haven't done any of the homework for Pastor T and I see him on Monday. EEK! I guess I should get to it. Obviously I don't have much enthusiasm for such things. I am out of school for a reason! I don't want to do homework!

Seeing the T for D this afternoon (P). H won't be able to go because they're still working on our bathroom (getting shower replaced, which has then turned into a bigger project, as these things do...I'll be happy when there are no more workers in the house, though they haven't been this morning). Pretty nervous, as I have no idea how D will respond to P and vice versa. I talked to her on the phone for an hour last week and liked her but haven't met her in person. She's in the same office suite as Dr. T, but they don't actually work together--like he rents the space to her, but he doesn't supervise or employ her. He mentioned her name because he knows she works with younger kids (he only works with teens and up). T doesn't have a particularly good attention span, so concerned she's going to want to leave after like 20 minutes, but hopefully P can engage her in playing or something (play therapy is part of her modality). I was hoping H could come because that way, if D just wanted out or something, one of us could have stayed to talk to P. Hopefully we can make it work!
So, pocket riders welcome! |

And I spoke too soon re: workers in house, as one just arrived. Sigh. I feel my brief conversations with the plumber have reached new heights of conversational awkwardness (thankfully, H is working from home!) The tiling guy is OK.

Thanks for all the good wishes! It went...OK? I don't know. I have no idea how an initial consultation with a child goes. P said she was trying to get a sense of what she was like. There were some awkward moments, but D was also saying a few times that she didn't want to leave. P was trying to keep her in the moment, saying, "right now you're here" and getting her to take deep breaths. She said how D seems to have a lot going on in her mind at once. I was like, "She gets that from me..." And some things she was doing were signs of anxiety. Including some self-soothing behaviors. There was a fair amount of play (she had a dollhouse, some stuffed animals, and some fidget toys out), P asking D some questions (she answered most of them), D running around room and P saying she wasn't allowed to run there for safety, some other stuff. We went a little over so didn't set up next session--P said she'd call me. Worried she'll say she doesn't think she can work with D, but she also asked D near end if she wants to come back again, and that if Mommy says she's coming to see Miss P, it would mean coming to this room with the blue chair and the pink chair. So...we'll see, I guess? Felt a little weird in that she had the office right next to Dr. T (same suite), and I was there seeing her, not him. And D seemed disappointed that she wasn't meeting Dr. T :-) |

LT, it sounds like it went well, and I’m glad you’re taking your daughter to a therapist if that’s what she needs. Lots of kids don’t get that kind of support from their parents even when they need it.
I am wondering, though, if you should see someone in your own therapist’s suite, since you have such transference for him? I could see something happening like you getting anxious about possibly running into him and your daughter picking up on that, maybe even associating the anxiety with therapy or her own therapist so she starts to view them negatively. Or even the proximity just causing more inner turmoil for you. |

Yeah, you make some good points. I'm a bit less concerned about running into him because he usually does appointments on the half hour and she does them on the hour. And with it being late afternoon, it's less likely he'd be taking a break then (vs lunchtime). But I can also confirm that with him. I figure I'll see what she says when she calls and then maybe try another couple sessions, see how it goes. It could also be that D needs someone with more expertise in autism (found a couple possibilities on Psychology Today). But an advantage of her location is that she's right by H's work, so would be easy enough for him to attend. And I imagine it's something I could talk to T about, like, "Hey, is there a chance I could run into you? How would that go?" I didn't feel particularly anxious about running into him or being near his office--honestly, I think I felt more calm because it was a familiar setting. |
