Does anyone get stuck on specific songs that remind you of your therapist? Currently the 4 that remind of me the most of the T I miss the most are: Black And White Movies, Halls, and, The New Years Song, all by Andrew McMahon In The Wilderness, and With Or Without You, by U2.

Also Brothers On A Hotel Bed by Death Cab For Cutie sums up my sessions with her from November-February perfectly.

The only song I can think of when I think of my last T is: I still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking for, by U2

Does anyone else do this or just me? I think it’s a sign of depression for me.

Danse Macabre, Night on Bald Mountain, The Hut of Baba Yaga, The Theme from Jaws. I used all of those for the ring tones of the ones I hired

I'll list more in a bit, but I was tempted to play Death Cab for Cutie's
for my T recently, the "I need you so much closer" in terms of his initially saying he could meet clients in person in May, then changing his mind.

I actually played "
" by The National in session for him a couple years ago, because I think it was reflective of my general feelings (not so much for him at the time, but for ex-MC and also in relation to anxiety, with "It takes an ocean not to break" and "And I can't fall asleep, without a little help, It takes a while to settle down my shivered bones, Until the panic's out." It led to an interesting discussion--he got the "it takes an ocean not to break" reference without my explaining it (I'd given him a sheet with the lyrics before, as requested).

I have numerous songs I associate with my current T and with my former marriage counselor--will go into those in a separate comment.

Cinnamon girl. Yes its a song about a romantic break up but lyrics of "There things I want to say to you, but I'll just let you live. There's things I want to talk about but better not to keep. Like if you hold me without hurting me you will be the first who ever did". That really hits home with some of my therapists........

It is part of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.

This is an orchestrated version. The original piece was written for piano and is loads better in my opinion. Khatia Buniatishvili is a lovely playing:

Thanks, Mountaindewed.

This is a really interesting thread - I am sure I have something, but will have to think about it. Music has played a huge role in my work with R.

Mike Shinoda- Hold It Together

Doesn't necessarily remind me of my therapist, but therapy sessions in general.

I can’t think of any songs that I associate with my therapist… or any foods or movies or anything.

I guess I associate him with his office, and with being miserable and too depressed to get out of bed, because those are the places when I have connected with him most intensely.

A song that reminds me of both of my T’s is “somebody That I Used To Know.”

I like the part that goes “think of all the times you screwed me over.”

Also the song “Cool Kids” reminds me of them for no reason. It just makes me think of them.

Originally I associated the song “Broken” with my last T but not anymore.

The song “Unwell” by Matchbox Twenty reminds me of life in general.

After a rupture:

Epica - Our Destiny:
"I won't give up, we'll fight to win
To move along from where we'd been
I'll sing this song for you again
I'm looking up around the bend
We're so much stronger than before
Our fraying edges on the mend"

OK, let's see here. Aside from the couple I already listed, first we'll do ex-MC (strong paternal transference, some romantic transference at times):

Ex-MC (part 1):
Børns:
("Through all of my lives, I'd never thought I'd wait so long for you, The timing is right; the stars are aligned")--transference stuff, obviously
Built to Spill:
("You thought of everything, but some things can't be thought. You thought of everything, but one thing you forgot...is you're wrong." And other lines.)

Decemberists:
(sat crying in a post office parking lot listening to this while stopping to mail something after a session: "I wanted you...I needed you to make me better...And all I wanted was a sliver to call mine And all I wanted was a shimmer of your shine To make me bright...because we're not so starry-eyed anymore...")
Editors:
(listened to this sobbing on repeat while holding a stuffed animal that I later associated with him after he said some things that really hurt me: "We've all been changed from what we were; our broken parts left smashed on the floor...I can't believe you if I can't hear you...")

Other Ex-MC
The National: It was after a concert of theirs, while I was waiting in the parking garage for the traffic to clear out, that I sent an email to ex-MC on my phone, saying how "I love you so much," that led to a major rupture and ultimately the demise of the therapeutic relationship. I've gotten to a point where I can separate the songs from the experience and enjoy them again.

("Hey love, we'll get away with it...our hands are covered in cake, but I swear we didn't have any... we're the heirs to the glimmering world.")

("I'm in a state, I'm in a state, nothing can touch us, my love")
("You're the voice that's swallowing my soul soul soul...")
(profanity warning) Note: I'm not sure why I associated this song with him, I would just blast it while driving home from sessions, sometimes feeling happy, sometimes crying)

I asked my T to listen to the song Halls because it reminded me so much of her. The first part that goes “pouring rain in Tucson Arizona, checked into the Congress hotel” reminds me of how I had to check into a hotel while looking for a new house. It was raining too. Then the part that goes “I’m looking for another story I could tell.” Means how I can often move on from person to person easily and the last therapist is just another chapter in my life. The part that goes “Cut my hair and I found me a new girlfriend” is about how I found a new therapis. The part that goes “thought a broken heart could fix a perfect song. But it didn’t so I’m right and now your gone” meaning that I found a new therapist but still couldn’t replace her. Then there’s a part that goes “played the show, left another message, booked a ticket for tomorrow in Tempe. 3AM I’m doing cartwheels down the hall way, I’ve been drinking since the day I set you free. But on this airport morning will you wait for me.” That is reference to the email situation and how I often wake up at 3AM and I drink cough syrup sometimes to deal with my emotions. Then everything after that part is “you echo in the halls, I feel your shadow on this empty stage, I hear your music through the walls. I see your picture on the blank page” which just means wherever I go I can feel her and random stuff reminds me of her.

I asked her to listen to the song at our second to last session and then at the last one I asked if she did and she said she read the lyrics and she asked me why I wanted her to listen to it. And I told her that it reminded me of her. Then she said to keep in mind the transference with the next therapist.

I’ve probably just gone off my rocker but it really does remind me of her.

MercyMe's "The Hurt and the Healer" reminds me of ling term T

I'm alive
Even though a part of me has died
You take my heart and breathe it back to life
I'll fall into Your arms open wide
When the hurt and the healer collide
Breathe
Sometimes I feel it's all that I can do
Pain so deep that I can hardly move
Just keep my eyes completely fixed on You
Lord take hold and pull me through

Crowder's "Come as You Are"

So much of the song reminds me of how as Broken as I often feel she accepts me for who I am.

So lay down your burdens
Lay down your shame
All who are broken
Lift up your face
Oh wanderer come home
You're not too far
So lay down your hurt
Lay down your heart
Come as you are
There's hope for the hopeless
And all those who've strayed
Come sit at the table
Come taste the grace
There's rest for the weary
Rest that endures

After yesterday's session, I now have to add
.

Strange how you can know a song, but not really think about the lyrics.

'I've been searching for something, taken out of my soul
Something I'd never lose, something somebody stole...'

One way or another, my time in therapy has been about grief work.
Still is...
