Do you have goals in therapy? Or have you had them?

If not, what keeps you going back?

When I started out years ago my goal was to feel less depressed… I could never think of anything better than that so I just stuck with it
But now, I feel pretty hopeless that that is actually a realistic goal. So I feel goalless and am starting to wonder why I am actually bothering with therapy other than to have an emotional connection with someone…

I have always had 'goals', yes, things I would like to be different. Things that keep me going back, as you say. I had them with Ex T and found the piece of paper I had written them on last year, it was nice to see that I had achieved lots of them. I no longer found some of the words unthinkable, I made friends, we processed some stuff. My T on Tuesday suggested writing out what I think we still have left to work on, so your post is timely! I took it to session today and she said it was a great list.

Maybe think about it less as goals and more as what you would like to be different. What you don't have that you would like, or what you do that you wish you didn't, or what you find hard that you wish was easier. If that makes sense?

Yes, I have two goals, one of which has been the focus of my therapist and my work for the first year. I think he has much more goals for me than I do. Perhaps your T does, too.

L and I make goals together. Year 2 was about honesty. Year 3 was about openness. Now year 4 is about finding the middke path. Those are the major goals. The specific goals are more like working on the topic of body and sex, dealing with the unsatisfation of my life, etc. And still working through daily life issues or things that come up. Other times, we play games or do answers and questions.

My most important goal at the moment is building tolerance for the difficult emotions I am experiencing.

Learning to be patient whilst doing this is a mission.

I think goals can be as ‘simple’ as be happy, and whatever that means for you.
