How dare you? The English can clog our arteries just as well as the Scots. God didn't invent the pork pie for nothing.

I'm watching the Gilded age. On episode 1: $30 in 1882 would be worth roughly $820 today.

I've never understood why the value of money changes over time.

Is there an idiot proof explanation?

This week's dog treat is homemade bonemeal mixed with a can of pumpkin, oats, rice, the dregs of chicken broth I made, and some flour. I decided to bake them this time in a mini muffin tray instead of dehydrating - baking doesn't smell as bad. Then I will cut them into 4ths and dehydrate to make them hard and dry -both to extend the shelf life and to be able to put in my pockets easier than a crumbly thing. For some reason - using the bones and having almost no waste just delights me.

I think it has to do partly with abandoning the gold standard. Used to be, frinstance in america, the cash in circulation was backed by gold bars in Fort Knox etc. Then they stopped that law and Congress "just started printing money" - you may have heard that expression. Then bad people took over and thats pretty much the limit of my knowledge and my explanation for everything
Thanks for this!

For the Americans: (and some for us)

1. Creation of the Federal reserve.

2.Nixon took them off the gold standard in the 1970s.

3.More money has been printed in the pandemic years than the previous 200 years.

4.Fractional reserve banking. You can lend on money you don't physically have to hold.

5. Quantitative easing in 2008 after the last crash (more printing after deregulation and selling bad mortgages to people who couldn't afford them).

Bank notes were just a promise to pay. Before you could exchange the note for gold. With the removal of a gold standard the value of each $ has been eroded. As governments print more the currency supply increases, and the purchasing power decreases. You can buy less with each dollar.

Fiat currency literally is just pieces of paper and no better than monopoly money.

Inflation is theft. People no longer being able to eat has started many revolutionary fires.

To protect yourself you should by physical assets like gold, silver and food. 2024 is going to be wild.

Oh I am having so much trouble accepting it too! I feel like it was a pity diagnosis, like she felt she had to slap me with something

Thank you to those who've helped with the money explanation.

So, the more paper money that exists, the less it is actually worth?

Yes, although it is not just about paper money. Production of goods affects the value of money too. The more goods that are produced, more people sell the goods, more money goes around and thus its value goes down. The more there is, the less valuable it is, like any commodity or item to which we assign value. If everyone had a bag of diamonds like they were marbles, diamonds would cost what marbles cost.
Thanks for this!

My sister's dogs are so funny. She makes dog treats for them that they go bonkers for, by spreading their soft food onto a pan and air frying it, then breaking it up into little pieces. They don't go that gaga over it when it's just their food in a bowl, but boy, air fried and crunchy, they love it! haha

That sounds like it would smell so bad - my dogs would love it. I have to dehydrate their lamb lung and liver outside because of the smell

Yet somehow Scotland leads the UK in heart disease.

Unless…comrade, I see it now! You English who move to Scotland are part of a grand conspiracy to drive up Caledonian rates of heart disease!

The gold standard was THE issue in the Presidential election of 1896. Ah, simpler times…
