It seems like some have for many years like me (3) Do you think you will ever be okay to leave therapy? I hope I will when I work out all my issues.

I've been in therapy now for almost 6 years, 3 years with another T before that. But I have been in and out of therapy since the age of 8. I'm 35 now. Started going into psych hospitals when I was 15 with major depression with psychosis. I know I will always need to be in therapy of some kind. I have a wonderful T that has offered to be my T as long as I want.

i have been with my t for about 16 years off and on... the last break in t was about 7 years... but i have been seeing him again for about 3 years... i think (for me anyway) you have to revisit the issues at different times of your life... i wish it was a one time kind of thing... but for me it hasn't been...lyn

I've been in therapy for a year and a half. My T says that one day I might not need therapy anymore.

I've been with my current T a year and a half today! (I'm 22)

Previously saw a social worker for about 6 months when I was 16-17.

Had social workers/therapists/psychologists in and out of my life because of my family, but the above two were there for just ME and not my other crazy relatives.

I first had therapy as a kid when I went into foster care, but that was more play therapy.....

I had adult T for many years. I moved and have been with new T for a couple months.

Sad to say and I am still a mess. How long have you all been in therapy?

I've been seeing the same T for 10 years (yikes), and it's been a real rocky 10 years, especially the past 3 or so. But I'm so much healthier emotionally than when I started. Now if I could just get over this damn social phobia. Been seeing a pdoc (2 different ones) for about 7 years. I hope to eventually cut back on the therapy - I'm already at a point where I think I might talk to my T about only seeing her every two weeks instead of weekly, but don't feel quite secure enough to do that just yet. I really hope to be free of meds and pdocs at some point - but I really have trouble seeing that day coming. I've also had an addictions Dr.., who I see for therapy about every three weeks for the past year. I also see her weekly for group therapy in a women's recovery group. I'd like to keep that group up once I return to work and want to stay in it until I've been sober at least a year.

I've been in therapy for about 3 years now. (since September 2005) with a total of... 4 T's. Which is brutal.

I dont think any of my Ts have ever thought I'd be in therapy long-term... I just need to 'deal' with a few issues, and then the rest I could deal with on my own.

I started therapy when I was 20 (I'm 57). I saw the same T for nine years, 1978-87, then didn't see her for nine, then saw her another nine 1996-2005. I told her when we were terminating (both of us retiring) that means I'll have to see another T in 2014 How long have you all been in therapy?

Let's see.... I started therapy when I was about 17 and saw a therapist regularly until I was about 19. Then I saw her on and off until I was around 21, I guess.

I stayed out of therapy until I was about 23. I went back in with someone that I started to like very much, but it did not work out for reasons I don't feel like mentioning cause they don't make that much sense. It only lasted for a little while.

Shortly after, I left NY and moved to Philly at the age of 24. I have been seeing my current T for two and a half years (I'm 26 now).

the T i started with last year had a cap of 10 sessions because it was a university clinic, but he said " maybe by the end of 10 sessions you won't need a therapist anymore..."

that was October 2006, and my current T & i are certainly nowhere near "finished"

I've been in therapy for approximately 9 months. I worried enough (only about 6-7 months), about when I should terminate. Now I figure I'll quit when I'm done.

ummm... in University i started (at 20) and saw this guy for probably not quite a year... then he moved. i was in a group for a bit until i traveled at 21... then started again at 26 and by the end of the year i was broke and she didn't believe i had any problems that forgiveness couldn't get me through and really didn't believe (or couldn't treat) the SA. 3 or so months later i started again due to horriffic flashbacks and stayed there 3 years. Then switched to a trauma t for a year, and ran out of mula, and now (31) am with my current t just 6 months. so, the long and short of it is 5 years, with 5 t's... and 6 Dx's.

I have been in therapy once when I was younger, for 8 months before I went to college and now again for about a month and a half.

I think I am going to be one of those people constantly in therapy, which I see as a good thing. It will keep me in the habit of reaching out.

Steadily for one year with my current T. Usually I don't stick around. Overall, 12 or so years of sporadic therapy and many therapists.

Just over 2 years with the same therapist (only T I've ever had). I'm so much healthier and functioning so much better. I don't intend to quit though. How long have you all been in therapy? At least not as long as I find anything of value in it. I expect that to mean I'll stay for a long long time to come. Guess I'm into long-term therapy. How long have you all been in therapy?

I think its been about four years for me in therapy. Id hazard a guess that ive had seven or eight different t's in that time and four pdocs. In the beginning i fired the first 3 because they annoyed me in some way. Then the next several left me because they were transferring to a different town and the last one i had to stop seeing because i moved and am too far away. My next t ill see in mid april. I cant imagine staying with one t for more than a year or two, it seems foreign to me. Each one has their own prowess and weakness for things and ive learned from all but one in particular.
