I've noticed through out there is a common thread of changing therapists. Everyone talks about their new one or past ones. How do you know if you need a new therapist and what would be a reason to change? Does any one see a single therapist until they are healed? Or am I just out in left field? What is this thing where the therapist dumps their clients? What's that??? How are we to learn about relationships if they can't keep one?? I guess I'm just to new at this therapy thing.

Angel, I am on my second therapist. I saw the first one for less than a year. She helped me somewhat on some things, like getting more sleep (I was totally exhausted due to lack of sleep). At some point, I reached the limit of her skill set and there seemed to be nothing further she could do to help me move forward. So I stopped seeing her. I didn't actively seek out another therapist, but one fell into my lap who was just right for me and who had a different theoretical approach, a broader skill set, and was especially experienced in the areas I needed help in.
So for me, I needed someone who could really help me, and help me heal, so that was why I got someone new. I cannot imagine ever seeing another therapist than the one I have. When I finish therapy with him, I will see no one else. Angel, are you feeling like you are ready to move on from your current therapist?

I found out some stuff on the internet (public info) about her family member and she got really angry. I had been seeing her for just over a year. It was very upsetting but she was wrong. I just started going to a new psychologist last week and I like her very much. She is way more experienced and a member of the state licensing board among other things. Sometimes it just isn't a good fit or the therapist has her/his own issues like mine did. She really hurt me though. |

I can't remember how many I've seen over the years. I kept changing because that is the nature of the public service - people move on fairly regularly.
I've been working with my current therapist for over two years now (WOW!! I remember posting about our first meeting!!) but he has a private practice (and isn't planning on moving). |

No, I'm not looking to change therapist, the thought never even entered my mind. I was just feeling confused by all the talk about old/new/second or third therapist. I feel like I have invested enough in my current T as she has in me; to change would be very harmful to me. I was shocked to hear that T's can dump clients. I'm still not sure what to think about that. If mine dumped me, it might just be the last straw for me.
