So... I have my first therapy session coming up on in a few days,
and to be quite honest... I am scared out of my mind.
I don't know what to expect.
What will it be like?
What kind of things will they ask me?
What will we talk about?
Will he/she put me on medication or no
(since it is just my first appointment)?

(((((((((((((((((((((((((((manda))))))))))))))))))))))))

At my first appointment, it was really just to sort of meet each other and see if it felt like a good fit worth trying.

It was the only appointment where he took notes. He just asked me about my family now, family of origin, things like that. Nothing DEEP, just information. He asked me why I was coming to therapy, and what my goals were. He told me a little bit about how he does therapy, how payment works, etc. At the end of the appointment, he asked me if I felt like we could work together. That was pretty much it!

I was really scared to go, but it was VERY low key, more of a history taking than anything. I mentioned a little bit about the childhood stuff that brought me there, but just touched on it. It wasn't scary or overwhelming.

Good luck to you....I hope you will come back and tell us how it goes!

Thanks for this!

Hi Manda,

I remember my first time, and I do admit it is scary the first time around, but if it is a good T, they will know how to help you feel more relaxed. Remember they are usually a little nervous too. But it is usually just basic stuff they go through, their policies, your basic info, etc. Only a psychiatrist can prescribe mediation, not a psychologist. Do you know which one you will be seeing?

Good luck Manda, and let us know how it went!

No I don't know... I just called my local mental health place, so I don't know which one they will refer me to.

Manda,

You could call and find out, they should have told you anyway. It might make a difference in how your first appointment will be and might help calm you some. YOU CAN DO THIS MANDA, so many of us have been right where you are now. You should applaud yourself for getting help you need. Not everyone is that brave you know. ;-)
Thanks for this!

Taking medication is your decision. They are not your dictators.
