Coincidentally, I am I fan of the show "House" and the program last night featured a psychopath. It was very interesting in that regard.

Read The Sociopath Next Door by Martha Stout, ph.d., who states that 1 in 25 people fit this personality disorder. As with any mental illness, there are different degrees. One might kill, while another won't go that far but will rob you blind. I've known several people who fit this description- they don't have a conscience & are manipulative, compulsive liars.
Has anyone seen the show Dexter, about a serial killer who only kills people who deserve to be killed? In other words, a serial killer with a conscience. I can't watch that show b/c the concept is so stupid, it's an oxymoron, & I'm sure that it makes some people actually believe that serial killers have hearts.
However, I am glad that the actor who portrays the character in the series won best actor, b/c he has cancer.

Perhaps we can figure out a way to raise public awareness of this, or at least on this site? Anyone have any ideas?

Why? I don't think it's up to anyone here to do that.
As far as bringing awareness about it to this site, isn't that what this thread did?

The statistic is actually accurate to antisocial personality disorder. But Stout describes psychopathy, which is more rare. Only 1 in 100, but much more dangerous than your general ASPD. One of the reasons I'm not fond of that book...

I've seen all four seasons, and the longer the story continues, the less believable it gets. I haven't read the books, but in the TV show Dexter's personality is more consistent with schizoid PD than psychopathy. Aside from his murderous tendencies, of course. It's kind of nice that the show is desensitizing people from the concept of psychopathy.

OMG! That's my sister.
OK How do you deal with someone like that? How do you stop them manipulating? Why do people always believe them? (guess its 'cause they're so dam good at lying and so very convincing)

You leave. We don't ever stop manipulating people. The majority of the time, it's subconscious, and I don't even realize I'm doing it. My wife usually tells me. Or she's like, "Michael, shut up!", then punches me in the arm. It works for her, but I'm trying to make my relationship work, and I don't want to hurt her.

Oh Nucking! You are so silly! There is already a forum for people dealing with people like this here! You go to personality place. Then you go to Antisocial Personality Disorder. Then you can support others also dealing with someone with this disorder because it really is tough to deal with.

I forgot something. We're really not good liars. If you listen closely, our stories are often inconsistent. This is often missed if speaking in person. But if you video tape it, it's easy to see. What is convincing is the manner in which it's said. And sorry to hear about your sister.
Thanks for this!

Curious....what about people who constantly make their own achievements seem waaaay bigger than they really are. The type of people who always know everything about everything. If they see a random person on the street they know them. If someone does something important they are from their hometown. Even when you google the stuff they're talking about and prove them wrong....they still do it. Its really quite annoying.

[X]Glibness/superficial charm
[]Grandiose sense of self-worth
[]Pathological Lier (I do a lot but I don't think it's pathological)
[X]Cunning/manipulative
[]Lack of remorse or guilt
[X]Emotionally shallow (can be)
[X]Callous/lack of empathy (Can be)
[X]Failure to accept responsibility for own actions
[X]Need for stimulation/proneness to boredom
[X]Parasitic lifestyle
[X]Poor behavioral control
[XXX]Promiscuous sexual behavior
[X]Lack of realistic, long-term goals
[X]Impulsiveness
[X]Irresponsibility
[X]Early behavioral problems
[]Revocation of conditional release
[x]Many short-term marital relationships
[]Criminal versatility

That's all the behaviors I have of the ones you listed. I've been informed of my abusive nature which I have been working to repair but a lot of these depend on my "state" which Im not really sure means, be it a mild DID or bipolar or something else. What does this mean for me?

Silas, I would not be concerned. Having bipolar rules out psychopathy.

I would like to remind everyone here that we are not here to diagnose anyone. There are many crossover behaviors that may indicate another illness and not psychopathy.

If anyone is concerned about these behaviors within themselves or with a loved one, please seek information from your doctor or therapist/psychologist/psychiatrist.

Since PC is a self help mental health "support" site, we are here to support those with many different kinds of illness. Let's not single out anyone by being unsupportive.

With respect,
_sabby_
