How do you talk to a friend when stuff has happened in the past and you both dont know how to best communicate . Im so confused and stuck

I found it better to email rather than talking face to face....because you can edit your email and read it over and over to make sure you are saying things right, versus talking to her directly and saying something and not being able to erase it! also, the best practice is just postponing it till the emotions get settle down.....
