Again, estranged from mother and father by choice. I have no interest in reversing that process.

As long as I lived home I was never allowed to watch a scary movie without extreme dismay from my mother. Sour faces would start and she would leave the room. From the getgo, I would always be told that there was a problem because Satan was involved.

Just trying to understand what might have been happening.

My wife and I consider ourselves to be God fearing and watch scary films all the time.

Thanks

People have all different sorts of religious beliefs; I know some now who believe dancing is evil, which I do not. The only one who could tell you why they believe Satan is involved in watching scary movies would be a person who believes that? I think dancing is supposed to be bad because it mimics sexual moves. If I were going to guess about Satan and scary movies, I would think watching evil might encourage evil, "Rosemary's Baby," for example, is not exactly Christian fare? I don't know but don't think too much/often about it as it is not part of my own interests or beliefs?

Very interesting! Also had problems watching G rated movies...should have mentioned that earlier. Even the unexpected word "damn" would cause dismay. Just about anything in the movie would set her off. I wasn't allowed to watch Dr. Doo Little because it made fun of fat people for example. I felt like I was in trouble watching a movie if a scene she didn't like would come on. I didn't make the movie. It was tough!

Wow that is tough, feeling like it is your fault for scenes in movies you don't know are in there yet because you haven't seen it yet!

My stepmother caught me in some pretty good double binds (can't win either way, "Have you quit beating your wife?" is the classic example; if you answer "yes" it means you use to beat your wife, that's not good, but if you answer "no" it means you are still beating your wife :-)

I still remember when we'd have dinner and I would have to go to the bathroom afterwards and my stepmother would get angry, declaring I was trying to get out of doing the dishes like I was supposed to. So, while I'm in the bathroom, she'd do the dishes and be all angry at me! Why couldn't she just let the dishes wait; not like I can stay in the bathroom forever? But I grew up being confused and not knowing or trusting myself and my motives and memories.

People like that use to be called "crazy makers".
