The 7-Step Guide to Ruining Your Relationship

Quote:
1. Take no responsibility for your own feelings
Make sure that you do not take responsibility for your own feelings and your own sense of safety and security. Make sure that you ignore your feelings enough so that you create an empty black hole inside that needs to be filled up by sex, things, or by someone else's love or attention.
2. Find someone to do it for you
Look for someone to fill your emptiness, someone to make you feel loved, happy, safe and secure. A good way to determine if this is the right person is if he or she comes on REALLY strong, promising you the world, or at least great sex.

I'm guilty, too. I think everyone is. It would be nice to have some guidance instead of a sarcastic shot at people's egos. Sitting on a high horse and being demeaning towards readers does nothing to enhance learning or growing.

The biggest relationship ruiner is the withdrawing part. Withdrawing emotionally destroys everything.

Ok I'm a brand new member here and reading this really hits home for me. This is exactly why I joined this site. My bf and I just broke up and I'm very depressed. I have finally realized that I have a "pattern" and after reading this, it's the exact pattern I have had in every relationship. I'm starting counseling again next week to break this but if anyone has advice on how to quit repeating this type of behavior I would be grateful!

Thank you!

You recognized the pattern that's the first step. Starting counseling with that in mind is step 2. It's amazing how many people never recognize it and keep on doing the same thing over and over and over.

Bravo - you're on your way to fixing it....

Hi, A&A, welcome to PsychCentral (PC).

Like Gilead said, looks like you are well on your way to working to change your pattern to one that is more healthy. Patterns are full of steps, kind of like links in a chain, and just identifying and working to break one negative one can help.
