Hi folks,

This may give you a laugh, although I'm struggling to see the funny side.

So, I'm doing my shopping in the town and a woman who has seen me perform my poetry attracts my attention and chats. She tells me all sorts of stuff about her holiday in Australia - blah blah - and then she says that her partner is retiring from his caretaking job soon.

She says, "He finds it a stressful job, looking after people like you."

Er, hello? - looking after people like me?

Does she think I am in residential home or something? Does she think that artistic people need looking after?
Does she think I'm on the skids?

OK, I know that this is hitting my self esteem. I know it's petty of me to be hurt by it. I want to tell her that I own a very nice house, that I have assets and that I don't need looking after.

Instead I just say nothing and fume to myself.

This kind of stuff never happened in the city, but in this small town I'm trapped by regular people who seem to be crazier than I am! Grrrrrrr.

Cheers, M-venting

Well, you're right to feel hurt by it. Labeling in any form is unecessary and well, hurtful.

I think we are quite special actually, much more special that "people like her".

You are you - and that is special!!

((((Myzen))))
I would feel hurt too. I either care way too much what people think, or I don't give a flying fig. Nothing in between. Are you like that too? You must have a lotb of inner strength. I don't think I would survive long in a small town!

Hi Sabrina and Praxis,

I feel a bit stupid.

My wife says that she knows this lady and that the lady in question is aware that I retired from teaching through stress. My wife thinks that I misheard the sentence.

She thinks it was " He finds it a stressful job, looking after people ----like you" ( as in 'like you did') My wife thinks that I was 'filtering for negatives' due to my depression.

Well, whatever, it is so silly now that I am going to let it go. I guess these sensitivities just creep up on us and overwhelm us and we have to be aware of it.

I hope somebody finds this funny; I am beginning to see the humour!

Good thoughts, M

The way you heard it...yes it would be very hurtful!

But then again, we don't always hear things as they are meant to be heard...like your wife has said.

Whatever was implied, I think you're wonderful!
