I know I've already put a couple topics about my dad and brother.
My brothers on the other hand curse quite a bit. I get irritated when I hear curse words. People can say they are just words, though I find them offensive. I think why do you need to put those extra words into language anyways. Most of the time it has to do with anger and it's not healthy by any means. I know for sure that I will not put cursing into my language. I have told my brother a couple times that I do not like cursing. And he told me the last time: It's me, I curse all the time. I feel like having a small talk about how I feel uncomfortable and my thoughts upon them. I know you can't force people to stop, though if you continue to tell people something about their behavior they normally start respecting your thoughts. That's what I learned in my assertive course. Just be calm and firm every time you speak. You'll notice a difference in the people around you. I could also add humor when I speak to my brother and mention a game of each time we both curse we should put a quarter into a jar and whoever cursed the least gets the jar at the end of the month. He knows it would be a challenge and I can tell him I know you could do you if you put your mind to it. |

I know what you mean, but I think cursing tends to become a habit over time. My family were not cursers, so I particularly find it offensive and unnecessary. But it seems to be more and more accepted.
If you have tried to ask them to tone it down and they don't, then I don't think there's a lot to be done about it except maybe to leave when they get going with it. But I don't know if that would help. After all, they are grown people. |

Cursing also offends me and makes me uncomfortable but it seems that more and more people are doing it. I've had people tell me they curse because it is fun(?). I am particularly uncomfortable when my niece curses in her FB messages, especially because I know my mother is reading them. It probably won't help talking to your brother because people who use such language see no problem with them doing so. You may just have to live with it.
