So basically I told my friend about me liking our mutual friend... and well my heart is just pounding right now and I don't even want to look at what her response was. But I can't just never go on Facebook because that's like my only connection to the outside world.. agghhhh I hate Facebook.. it sucks compared to real life, but when you have no life outside school, it might be better than nothing. Thoughts?

I agree that we need to be very careful what we put on Facebook. It can get us into all kinds of trouble.

I used to worry about my grandson being on Facebook, some of the things that teenagers say on there (he`s 13) the abuse and arguments, scary. I have tried to tell him not to get drawn into other peoples` arguments. So far he has been OK, I would hate to think he was being bullied or was doing the bullying, I would not like to be a teenager these days there seems to be so much pressure on them, how you talk, what you wear etc, oh well.

On the plus side I have found old friends that I lost contact with many years ago, that wouldn`t have happened if we had mobile phones and computers back then, ( I was a teenager in the 60s great days!).

I am very careful about personal stuff on fb. If it's personal to my life, I only talk about it via chat on fb, not on the stream, it's just not a good thing. I'm constantly amazed at people and some of the stuff they reveal -- I don't think they even think about the fact that it's potentially reaching millions.

In 2011, approximately 1/3 of divorces named Facebook as one of the factors.

Here's a link to that:
Facebook, Divorce Linked In New Study

So yeah, FB is the worst thing in the world when it comes to real relationships. Causes nothing but trouble.

it's irrelevant to most people yet they still use it... something that targets their emotional/intellectual needs perhaps? I simply do not understand.

Yep, Facebook is truly not good. But it gave us:

Best quote of the day, ..." F you Facebook. F you in the butt."

I personally don't have facebook. I keep almost getting it, but then I keep hearing how much it sucks/ people hate it. It's not like we're not connected enough as it is with iphones, email and twitter, etc. . . I also don't have an official twitter page though, just an anonymous one.

although there may be many cases of this, the truth is this study

"...Russell Clayton, a doctoral student in the University of Missouri School of Journalism, and his colleagues at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and St. Mary's University in San Antonio surveyed 205 Facebook users between the ages of 18 and 82 -- 79 percent of whom reported being in a romantic relationship -- about their use of the social media site and whether or not it had instigated conflict with their current or former partners.... "

first off this "study" is tiny. considering the millions (billions?) of users on face book this is a tiny microcosm of the reality of the base users of facebook.

Second, if you read what it says "...and wehther or not it had instigated conflict..." is highly an opinionated statement far from a defacto statement.

So yeah I'm sure fb can and does at times affect relationships but in no way can be assumed to be a major player in divorces. that's just way over simplification.

It's really all in who you let on your stream and how you handle it. True FB can bring out much immaturity in people if misused but for the life of me I cannot remember a time when anyone did any of that immature stuff on my FB..

Of course if people start posting crap that i don't want to see, thank goodness fb has allowed me to turn off their posts to my newsfeed without unfriending them :/ People I want to keep in touch with but don't want to see their crap in my face every day.

I dont have a FB account. I'm introverted and just don't feel compelled to post about my life online. Also, I have OCD so if I did do FB, I can see myself being on it for hours...not posting about myself but looking up people and so on. I'd rather spend time on here, reading for pleasure, and gaming with my boyfriend (who doesn't have FB either).

I have heard people refer to "FaceBook" as "F*ckBook" ... yikes.

Facebook, I will say, quite honestly, CANNOT f' up anyone's relationship. It just is there. It's an application for cripes sake! What you did with it, how you use it is up to you and it has no power over you or anyone's lives. that's just silly.

People need to have the control and ability in themselves to know whether or not they can handle looking at fb and not getting all personal on it with people.

Just. Don't. Do. it.

People that post crap, their complaints, their daily drivel about life as if everyone in the world wants to see it, are just asking for trouble, and I don't want to see it, so for myself, I just turn off their posts showing up in my newsfeed automatically.

Is a friend annoyngly an over poster? what can you do? besides unfriending them which in and of itself is a huge drama invitation?

1. unsubscribe or choose their profile, go to where it says "friends" and on the dropdown, uncheck 'show in newsfeed' this will turn off the automated posts to your newsfeed so you can choose when and if you want to see their posts.
2. if necessary, turn off notifications also (same method as above but uncheck "notifications")
3. Chat - turn off chat for those that badger or hit you up too often when you dont' want them to. You can choose to turn off chat altogether, choose to turn it on for only a select few or make selections as to who you do not want to chat with.

In drastic situations, unfriend them and if necessary, block them.

If none of these things is enough to keep you from allowing FB to "ruin" your life, perhaps it is indeed time to get off FB.

All in all though, FB does nothing to relationships. people ruin them. Maybe its' based on something you saw on facebook or something you posted but frankly it did not do it on it's own.
Thanks for this!

FBook is not a very nice place. I found it was full of drama and made my depression worse, Plus having ADD, I sometimes said things I later wished I hadn't. Deleted my account after 5 years.

The only good thing about Facebook is that it allows you to connect with people you may never would have been able to without it. If I meet someone I like and want to be friends with, I just get their number. There are more bad aspects of Facebook than good, in my opinion.

I do have a Facebook, though I avoid adding any friends and stick to the cute virtual pet games you can find there. That is the only reason I remade my account after deleting my last one to get rid of all the people watching. I just stay away from people on there. I've heard of terrible situations happening on there, though, and hope I can avoid them. If anything goes wrong, I'll probably just delete the account again.
