Someone (a female) hired me to help her with some work. Throughout the project, she was enthusiastic and said I was doing good work, and reiterated at the end of the project (asking me to return).

Then, hours after I left, she sent me an email telling me that on second thought, she has decided to hire someone else (in place of me) to finish the work. (And she said that she wasn't sure who replace me yet. So it was NOT a matter of having already found someone better.) I responded honoring her request, and asked for feedback to improve future work. No response from her and it's been 3 days.

Why would someone be that changeable? Should it be a red flag?

If she ends up wanting to hire me again, do you think I should accept the job?
Thanks for this!

If working with her again causes you to have to turn down working for someone else, I'd pass it up. It is a bit odd that she would change her mind like that, especially after she told you how well you were doing. I think that its best to move on from people like this.

Did she pay you for the work you did? I wouldn't worry about what to do if she asks to hire you again until it happens.

I'm not worried. My point is to learn from this, if possible.

She offered to pay me, but I said that if she doesn't like my work, then it's on me. I only spent a couple hours on it.

My take on it: I shouldn't ever let her hire me again because she's unpredictable. I have no idea what she might say about me and my work or what kind of a review she might write online.

A female friend's take on it: She thinks this lady has a crush on me.

I think she probably changed her mind because she realized she's attracted to you and didn't want to risk mixing business with pleasure...

It is also possible she thought you were doing a good job, but after you left she looked closer at it and decided it wasn't exactly how she wanted it. It might not be more than that. Am I the only "literal" person left on this planet? :P

There are many reasons JoeS that might have made her change her mind, not just that she has a crush on you.

But the important point is, like you said, she seems hesitant! So like ChipperMonkey said, if you're gonna lose another job to do another task for her (is she ends up asking you again!) don't do it, 'cause she might change her mind a fourth time!

Some people are just stupidly indecisive. It drives me crazy, but there's nothing you can really do about it other than not work with this person again. Who knows what personal reasons she might have, and really, who cares?
