And no, I am not talking about my psychiatrist (actually, I am temporarily without one). Just a psychiatrist, preferably one that I am compatible with as a person. I just find psychiatrists so incredibly sexy. The desire to help those of us with mental illness, the knowledge of a doctor, the stamina and intellectual power to get through med school...yum, lol.

Anyone know where I can meet a psychiatrist without signing up to be their patient? Haha

I could see wanting someone who is in a "helping people" field but why so specific?

My guess is that most of them are married.

I never dated a psychiatrist, but I dated a licensed counselor for a while, and felt he was judging me too much. I suppose in his line of work, he analyzes people a lot.

Especially since there are professions that are more helping.

And many psychiatrists see us crazies as broken-brained and different and would likely not date any of us. And some are judgemental as somebody said. I knew few people in that field and they sound like they took a comprehensive course of being judgemental and preachy.

Why do you assume all psychiatrist ended up in their profession because they have a desire to help people? There are many reasons why people choose to go to med school, one of them financial. I have a former classmate from school who failed getting into her first two choices of med specialization and ended up doing psychiatry as a compromise. A psychiatrist I have been to said she suffered from mental illness and chose psychiatry as a way to learn more about managing her own issues. Another said he switched areas, after he could not find a job in the area he specialized on. If you are attracted to people who live for helping others, maybe a social worker, a nurse, a therapist / counselor or a teacher matches more your type.

A retired nurse I met once on a flight told me that of all the doctors she ever met in her years working in hospitals, the nicest ones were consistently oncologists (cancer doctors) and ophthalmologists (eye doctors). Makes sense to me, as their fields demand higher degrees of empathy and gentility, respectively.

Psychiatry not so much, I don't think. They work very hard at remaining emotionally distant from their clients, and I think that dynamic likely spills over into their personal life. They tend to be pretty detached and aloof.

Do you think this is a projection due to future indecisiveness?

I think that it's fine to daydream though. !

I showed my American Eskimo dogs with a couple who were also breeding the American Eskimo dogs.....He was on disability but had been a psychiatrist for many years before disability hit....& it was for mental reasons nothing physical....burn out basically. He was a nice person but not someone I would have wanted to be married to (but then again, I didn't want to be married to my H at that time either...just needed to be free to get my own self together).

It is difficult to meet some outside their professions. You are very specific in your search. Try med schools for fresh ones, I would suggest.

Try joining a country club, perhaps? Not sure where exactly single female MDs look for partners, but that's one type of place that comes to mind.
