Okay so last night me and my girlfriend got quite drunk, we had a small argument, and her and I were a little upset, wouldn't say extremely upset. But out of no where I just snapped and grabbed her by the throat, I've never done anything like this and have no idea where it came from. I scared the both of us and I want to find help to make sure I never do it again. I have always said things like I'd beat someone's *** for hurting a woman, what caused me to do this and what can I do to not hurt her again? I had no control of myself. Please help me.

When people get drunk their prefrontal cortex (the part of the brain that modulates our instinctive behaviors) shuts down. If you don't do this when you aren't drunk (or think about it), and it's a one time thing, and of course after clearing things out with your GF by apologizing to her and explaining that you don't do or even think about that when you're completely conscious, then I think you don't have to worry too much about it. Just be concern with her well-being and let her know that you care about her.

You are right to be concerned. While whatever you two squabbled about may not seem too important, you are harboring more anger than you consciously recognize. That anger has been building up since before the argument. I think you would do well to uncover what is causing you to have a growing resentment that finally boiled over. This might be just the sort of thing that couple's therapy can shed some light on.

People differ in how they respond to alcohol. You may be one of those people who just should never drink heavily. Luckily, this time, no irreparable harm was done. On a future occasion, you might not be so fortunate.

I commend you for not brushing this experience under the carpet. You're taking responsibility for what you did, and you sound committed to the idea that this kind of behavior is utterly unacceptable. I feel optimistic that you can learn and grow from this.

Is the girl is still around? If man grabbed me by my throat I'd be long gone. Was she too drunk to realize what happened?
