compensation reaction

Have you ever noticed when meeting someone that if the person is overly friendly that they will be the first to turn on you? I've seen that many times. So often that it's the first thing I think of. It's another way of reading people. They are compensating for negativity in their personality and I'm sure it's almost entirely on the unconscious level. They over react to hide malicious feelings-even from themselves.

I've not pondered the concept before.

Perhaps those with the biggest smiles hide the hurting hearts.

I think I understand what you are referring to.

Some extremely friendly people have a real warmth in their friendliness and you can feel that.

Others, who I haven't come across too often, have a current of coldness/falseness to their projected friendliness. lol, the two I can remember offhand were both known for their love in spreading gossip. Usually very embellished and not very close at all to the truth.

I've certainly noticed that most people that take interest in me and are really nice and complementary to me only want to use and manipulate me. You just have to be very cautious of people who complement you or want to spend time with you when you've just met.

I'm unable to sense a coldness/falseness to them like you mentioned Michelea. I guess I pick up on it when someone only wants to hang out with me when they need help on their homework or go with them to religious recruiting events. Obviously preying on lonely people that they can trick to join their cult/religious group...

I've not found that in my personal interactions. An exception would be where a person is overtly disingenuous which is pretty easy to detect.
