My problem really isn't *because* of women, but just generally it's hard to approach a woman when you've had 15 years of mental illness and all of the med side effects. Yes, social phobia is still 'there', but I often get this feeling when I meet someone new: I am afraid they will find out my past and think I am 'psycho' or whatever stereotype; In my late 30's, I've now had to move back home with my elderly folks not just to take care of them, but am also finishing up my university degree...still..the 'stigma' of a grown man living with his parents. I've been told I am not a bad-looking guy, but the meds put on the POUNDS!...wowwzee. I am trying this online dating thing, not having a lot of luck. So, ladies and gentlemen, I could really use your thoughts on all of this.

I would try not to worry, when first meeting anyone, about further down the line. I would practice being friendly to everyone, chatting with grocery clerks while I check out (about the weather or some piece of news everyone is talking about) and become friendly with the mail person and other service people who come to your parents home. I'd maybe join a couple support groups; one for myself and one for care-givers so you could be around other people who are more likely to understand what is going on with you and with whom you could "practice" sharing yourself until you're a bit more comfortable.
Do you go to class at your university (or is it online like mine)? Talk to fellow students, men and women; just becoming friends with others is the first step I think.
