People want you to be there for them ... But God forbid if you ask the same in return?

People get mad at you for expressing an opposing opinion but if they do the same it MUST be acceptable?

People think they can cuss at you, yell at you, or call you names ... but if you do the same, you are the spawn of evil?

I don't understand - what is with all the freaking double standards? I realize it's not everyone - but it's enough to make it a problem!

Yes, I've noticed, and it's true. I've also found, if people know you have a mental illness, they automatically assume any and all of your thoughts, speech and actions--if they disagree with them--are controlled and caused by your illness.

And "we" are ever so there for them when they finally call... so desperate for human interaction and hopeful of genuine return of association..... which never come.

SO MUCH THIS!!!

I have been wondering if (in my case) depression happens to those who are more sensitive....or maybe those who have depression are prone to sensitivity....You can substitute any number of words for "sensitive" here....compassionate, empathetic, etc. I have even been called "needy"...

I wonder if there have been any studies...

Yes, unfortunately, I've experienced this also. (((Hugs everyone))) My theory for why this happens so often to us is... as depressed people, we feel more deeply and generally have more empathy than most of society. We will go out of our way for other because we know firsthand what it is like to struggle, and we want to prevent that struggle from happening to the people we care about. However, most other people simply don't feel like we do, they don't have as much empathy, so when WE are struggling, they don't process it the same way as if the situation were reversed. Hope that makes sense. Unfortunately I don't have any solutions. *Turns pockets inside out, finds only lint, shrugs* :/

Hi Crypts_of_the Mind:
My therapist keeps asking why all my friends are consumers/survivors. Its not every session but its very frequent. I've been seeing her for over a year. I tell her I can indentify more with fellow MI friends. I can be myself. My experience for the most part is if I mention my diagnosis they presume every significant thing I say is because of my psychiatric illness. I can relate to what you wrote bigtime.

I have that problem a lot when people are first told and explained I have BPD and what it is. It is a very aggravating thing. I described to one person how "every relationship I have been in has been abusive in some manner" and the response was "there goes your BPD again - I am sure it hasn't been EVERY relationship but maybe MOST, right?" I argued about a half hour and the conversation ended with the person saying "well, once you are able to have a more clear head and speak more rationally, we can continue this conversation."
That's just one of a ton of different occassions though.

Thanks for this. One of the very first photos that I placed in a PC album on my page was this...

I was going through something when I first joined here. And this rings true, to this day, still. Ever notice?

I wanted to help the people in my life. I had no doubt, at the time, that they would be there for me if the need arose. I did not call on them for years and years but when my time came, they all had excuses (not valid ones either).

I did not mean my comment in a derogatory way - but rather in a heartfelt empathetic way.

In other words, it was not flippant - it was sincere.
