I completely agree with this. I believe that this is what you were doing.

When I started to be more assertive, and to stand up for myself more, I found out that there is a learning curve. Like any other skill, it takes practice and reflection. Therefore, I want to encourage you to keep practicing the skill of sticking up for yourself. You are dissatisfied with how this situation played out, but if you practice sticking up for yourself, and reflect (without judging yourself) on how each effort worked out, I think that you will find yourself getting better at sticking up for yourself.
