You have my sympathy for the current situation with your SO and your car. "That is how men are" is not very validating but I myself have said the same thing to my friend in a well meaning way. Men and selfishness are not synonymous however and it's unfair for anyone to allude otherwise (though I admit in the heat of a frustrated moment I've probably made such correlations) it's not a good feeling to be stuck so I validate your discomfort with the situation.
