I'm not in love with her but I have to admit the attention is nice. We haven't Skyped but that doesn't mean we don't communicate - there's tons of translators in this day in age. It ain't hard to convert a Russian to a English and visa-versa. We've been texting for months and she's pretty good at emojis. I'm not going to cut her off just because she's not fluent in a English - she's a friend. The problem is I think she really likes me - why would she keep communicating with me if she wasn't. She could just say I don't want to do this anymore - right? Like I said I don't feel the need to say goodbye. We haven't done anything yet and I don't see the harm in having another friend. I may have to confront her on this emotional thing eventually - especially if she keeps asking me to meet her somewhere. Maybe I will ask her to Skype - we could do sign language if nothing else. As for online dating been there can't say I like it. It was frustrating beyond belief. Peace

We've been texting everyday since April - they're not extensive conversations but they are nice. Don't know if I've ever had any texting history with anyone that long......????

I think if you are serious about her then you need to learn her language.

My cousin met someone from another culture online, they married and have a child (however they are only a few years apart). He learned her language straight away. She most certainly did not marry for citizenship (she is not Russian but S.American) she misses her home/family terribly. I warn you though the imigration was not simple, has taken years and is still not complete.
Thanks for this!

Not even close to that yet. Thanks!

Google translator is a hilarious way to communicate. My dad when bored does it as a joke and sends us funny translations. Half of it makes no sense. It's ok for laughs or look up a word. You can't conduct a relationship via google translator and emojis. I think you are looking too much into it. Why not find someone you can actually talk to?

Yes Google translate can be hilarious, for a while before they met my cousin thought his now wife was learning English but after some very strange conversations realised she was using translate.

He made sure he Skyped with her pretty early on, he heard of a guy who thought he was communicating with a young woman but when he turned up at the airport it was actually the mother who had used her daughter's images.

Anyone else think it's a little early for learning languages?

Russian is one of the hardest languages to learn, if not the single hardest. I recommend looking for friends closer to home.

Actually, speaking to your lady friend, the appropriate word for hello would be privet. Sorry, don't have a Cyrillic keyboard or app any longer.

Hi Macd, what languages does she speak? I'm surprised English isn't one of them. Have you tried Skype yet? Even if you just use sign language, you'll get more of an idea regarding compatibility.

Joking aside I think it is only polite to learn a little of the language of any foreign friend. Even a few words. So many online guides these days too and it's a good brain exercise.

Good for you learning a few words.

I'd like to second the opinion that I'd rather learn any other language than Russian.

And I am Russian.
Thanks for this!

Wel i wouldn't start learning foreign language so I can Skype with someone I've never met and likely never will. But my husband is learning my native language because he is interested in it and he thinks it's the right thing to do (I personally don't care either way but do support his attempts) But we are married, not strangers.

Saying hello in Russian is very very far from ever speaking it.

In that case you may well do better to communicate in French.
