Wow, that is a sign she wasn't a good friend. Someone who can't accept that they have flaws as well.
Thanks for this!

Yeah, she turned out to not be a good friend, and I thought of her like a sister.

Yeah that hurts when that happens. It makes you have trust issues towards making new friends. People can be so rude at times and honestly, just like what some of the other posters said, I do believe that in these cases, people who make up lame reasons were either too cowardly to tell you the real reason why so they made up a reason or they weren't a real friend to begin with and were looking for ways, any way possible, to get rid of you once they found someone or a group of friends they liked better. I know exactly how you feel.

The DUMBEST all time reason for someone ending a friendship. COMPLETELY DISAPPEARING. It's what they call "ghosting" now. I know it is done terms of relationships and dating, but it happens in friendships too, moreso now than ever.

It's commonplace now for people to be super crappy and just end friendships, block people, and cut off all communication with you. Apparently avoiding people is the new thing to do.

This is the cruelest form of ending things, because you never get to know what you did, or why they ended it.

Cruel ways of ending relationships could be another thread for sure! The ghosting one was done to me once. It haunted me for years!

OH yes this has happened to me many times. It is very cruel and I strongly believe friends who do that were never really good friends. And I'm not just saying that. I truly believe that is the case. They obviously didn't have enough respect to say something so therefore they weren't really good friends.

I agree, I may put that on a separate thread actually. That would be a good idea for everyone to join. And yes I've been ghosted on and it has haunted me too!

My best friend at high school, we were inseparable for a long time, but we had other mutual close friends. She started dating this guy who you could instantly tell was really dodgy. He was super flirty with all of us, in front of her, but got very angry if she so much as said hello to another man. Lots of people saw him out with other girls but she wouldn't believe them, and she would refuse to talk to men, ditching all her male friends, for this horrid guy.

Anyway, he started adding us all on MSN messenger (it was a big thing back then lol) and she asked us to accept because "he wanted to get to know her friends" I accepted, first thing he does is send a webcam request (of himself to me) and I thought, okay why not. I clicked and it was his urm... nether regions which he was massaging.

I left the conversation, and later found out he did this to all of our friends. No one would tell her because she was literally obsessed with this guy, but at a house party I may have let it slip. She called me a liar, stormed out of my house, and has never spoken since. She ignored all our friends who told her the same thing, and is still with this guy and now has 2 kids with him.
Thanks for this!

I had someone unfriend me on Facebook over a disagreement about a song. He posted a video of P!nk doing a cover of "I Touch Myself" by Divinyls. I commented that I enjoyed the video but would always prefer the original. His reply was "no way is the original better!" and his tone definitely seemed more defensive than playful. I politely explained that I was merely stating my personal preference. No further response on his part--except to unfriend me.

I lost another friend due to our differing beliefs about the afterlife. We were having an online discussion about fun things to do when visiting new cities, and I suggested a ghost tour. She explained that ghost tours make her uncomfortable because, as a Christian, she believed that people either go to heaven or hell when they die--therefore, any spiritual entities roaming the streets would be demons, rather than the souls of the deceased. I explained that I believe in ghosts (in the traditional sense, that they are the souls of dead people) and asked if our difference in belief made her think less of me. She said "not really." After that, I could tell that something had changed between us. She became distant and eventually stopped talking to me altogether. Obviously "not really" actually meant "yes."

Most recently, I had a friend who went through a major personality change after she started dating a guy who was involved in a cult. (I don't know if that particular movement is technically classified as a cult, but there's definitely a cult-like mentality among its members.) She used to be very feminist and independent minded. Then this guy came into her life and she turned into the polar opposite. One day she posted an anti-female quote from Varg Vikernes--who is not only deeply misogynist and bigoted, but is also a convicted arsonist and murderer. I PM'ed her to ask if she posted the quote sarcastically, and she explained that she was serious and agreed with everything he said. I didn't know what to say. When I went back the next day to reply, I saw that she had already unfriended me. Simply for having asked why she posted the meme.

Fortunately these were all casual friendships. I was more amused than hurt by the way they ended. People can be so petty sometimes. And that last one...definitely a case of the trash taking itself out.

Wow, yeah those are all pity and yeah, I definitely would not have wanted to be friends with the last one.
