i am on another forum that is science based with questions about health issues etc... so im wondering....if you dont believe in science and dont think humans are animals and totally rule out evolution and all things related... why would you go to a forum thats science related?
so that when someone asks a question and the answer is related to evolution but they dont believe in evolution..... why ask the question? and then the "adults" in the forum say their little passive aggressive comments egging me on. i dont hold my opinion back and think everyone should voice their opinion whether it agree with mine or not. i love getting into a good debate with people. but the moderators back people up when their views follows the mods... but when i voiced mine and it was the opposite of theirs i was being immature and aggressive and i should just shut up. they told me to stop hijacking the thread. then someone else comes in, off the original topic talking about religion again after i had stopped, but its really religious and backs up the mod's views. so thats ok. then i defend myself and im being immature. grrrr...... i dont care what religion you are but dont be closed minded. if youre going to egg me on be prepared for the soapbox that will soon follow. and little comments like "i totally agree with her and no way would i want to get you started!" is included in that. because i figure, if you really dont want to get me started... why say something like that? when i was in middle school and high school i was so excited to get out because i thought the popularity contest would be over but its even worse than it was back then. and i love this forum because people can talk so openly about their opinions and can argue and fight and no one gets offended. its nice to have a good debate sometimes and im glad that it seems like people on here are more accepting and much more tolerant than people on this other forum. |

salukigirl,
People visit forums that they do not necessarily believe in or support for a variety of reasons. To educate themselves, to find out why people that are there believe in that issue, some to debate the issue, and some just to preach to hear themselves speak. I've seen people that do not believe in God in religious chat rooms/forums. I've seen gay bashers in homosexual chat rooms/forums.

Or it could be they like arguments, maybe they just want to be heard in a place they feel won't listen....... so many possible reasons. Seems like you have much to say about some things...... have you thought about creating your own blog? then you could make your point and decide whether you want debates or not and how the debates are handled.... just an idea. I certanily understand the feeling of being shushed when you didn't get to fully express your views...... I know how that feels ........ ![]() mandy |

its more just the fact that they cant preach all they want but when i give valid arguments they ignore them and tell me to shut up. its like theyre all fine and dandy until someone mentions a valid point to their contradictions then they jsut shut down th thread. someone said its not polite to talk about religion and about 3 other people talked about it and the mod didnt say anything. then i said something but because its not what she wants i was put down for it. its like they are only okay with discussing sensitive topics when it backs them up. and it just really made me mad that if you honestly dont want to get me started then drop it, dont make snide remarks knowing that youre making me mad. thats just childish.

It doesn't sound like a group for you. I'm with you in thinking "everyone should voice their opinion whether it agree with mine or not". But if people on their own web site (or one they "control") don't want to play the way you want to play, then don't play there! :-)

Why do you expect forums to be exempt from normal group dynamics? The reality is that the moderators do rule the forums and decide what is appropriate and yes, at times their own biases step in and at times they do censor debate to "protect" the members. This is nothing new. Most of society functions like this in one way or another. In North America right now this is quite trendy -- to stifle debate in the guise of keeping the peace. There is a great film called "Safe" that talks about this issue. It is by Todd Haynes and stars Julianne Moore. She plays a repressed housewife who lives in the burbs in this soulless existence and she starts getting sick. They can't find out why and everyone thinks it's in her head. Finally, they determine it's environmental illness and then she goes to this retreat to recover. The retreat is run by this kind of guru and it's all based on love and self-healing and not being judgemental. It all sounds great and as you're watching the film you're thinking, "Yes, okay. Sure. Positive messages." But then at one point you can't help feeling like Julianne should just tell everyone to ***** off! By the end it seems to me that she was allergic to people and to conformity. The point being is that most groups drive individuals to conformity. It takes a pretty amazing group to be able to look at its own *****. Unfortunately, groups like this do not exist or the world would be a better place. There is a fine line between keeping the peace and policing dissent.

well someone from the forum just sent me a message saying that there is a kind of uprising going on. but of course i cant read it now. she said that several people have said its stupid to ban me basically for believing in evolution.
i dont mind if a mod wants to censor me because it could be offensive and i look back at it and say "yeah, that could be taken the wrong way" and im fine. but wanting to censor me because i dont believe what you believe. thats just like 1984 on the internet. i even told the woman that maybe shes picking on me because its too hard for her to look at her own faults and she totally ignored my comments saying im too sarcastic and im evil. lol. people need to grow a sense of humour, i swear. i mean, this woman really hurt me one time with the things she was saying about me. and no one did anything. i sat for an entire night examining myself. i went over everything about myself and asked tons of people their honest opinions. my boyfriend said "yes youre sarcastic and outspoken but it doesnt bother me because i get you. people who are offended easily and really religious arent going to like you but that doesnt mean you need to change for them" and thats when i realized... why should i change because youre not comfortable discussing topics? i was talking to someone about my problems with my uterus and all these polyps rupturing and all kinds of things. this girl looked at me with this look of disgust telling me how rude i was talking about it and i just sat there thinking "why am i the bad guy because im comfortable with my own body?" and "why should i change because youre uncomfortable with your body?" i just think if everything were uniform this world would be so boring. being different is what makes things interesting and fun. why would you want everyone to be the same? |

People want everyone to be the same because it makes them feel safe. It makes them feel secure. It makes them feel in control -- like rejection, conflict, injury and death can't possibly happen ... EVER!
There is a difference between being considerate of someone's feelings and tolerating ignorance. Castigating someone for believing in evolution is crazy. It's worse than mental illness crazy because it is passing for sanity in our society. |
