People who refer to "my boyfriend" or "my girlfriend" at every possible opportunity, even when it's not relevant to the conversation. Why do they do that? "My boyfriend" "My girlfriend"

Why does it bother you?

I know what you are talking about, Impala. For the most part, I think that people just refer to "my boyfriend"/"my girlfriend" instead of using their actual name when the group or person they are talking to is not very familiar with their BF/GF. Though, I do think that in some situations individuals can be insecure about there relationship status, and feel the need to boast that they actually do have a BF/GF! Who knows though, right?

Mmm,yes ,hadn't thought about the "insecurity angle".It does seems odd,it's when it's not actually relevant to the conversation but they find a way to say it by making the most tenuous of links that it particularly strikes me.Why bother? "My boyfriend" "My girlfriend"

Sometimes when using just a name in conversation...say for instance...

"Lindsay went to the store"...

Would not identify the person especially to unfamiliars...it would be just a name without identifying context.

But if I said..."My daughter went to the store",,anyone listening would know the context of the person....

Names get used more frequently in conversation if all participants are familiars...It is almost an unconscious act in communicating...

IMHO.

I think as a teenage I use to want to slip anything into the conversation that helped me feel popular/part off/loved or just to basically show off, I think its a need someone has that they haven't found a better way of fulfilling that need within themselves, perhaps it would be better to try and understand intead of question? I dunno.

well the answer lies with the person concerned, perhaps that would be a better route?

I guess one reason could be that they want to brag that they have a boyfriend or girlfriend. Sometimes it seems like people do that to make you feel bad.
