Yes or no? And when is it too late to text a therapist? Only text during hours you know they are at work or text after hours as well? How about at 2am? My therapist said to text whenever I want but I feel bad texting outside of business hours. How personal do you get in texts or do you keep it strictly to canceling an appointment or something General like that? It's 11pm here and not doing that well and I want to text therapist but don't know what is appropriate and what is crossing inappropriate boundaries.

I don't know, since texting is not an option with my counselor. However, unless it was an emergency I wouldn't text outside of business hours. But that's just me and I'm old school.

Don't know either. Texting was never an option I got from any of my therapist.
I know some do text their T whenever. You could text, but maybe don't expect an answer immediately since it's already late? |

Every therapist has their own policy about texting, calling, emailing etc. There are no general rules about that. Your therapist should clearly outline it for you. If they haven't so far, ask them to do so.

My T gave me his number and told me it was for business stuff, and not to text him about personal things, unless of course it was serious.
Our texts are usually regarding appointments or stuff like that. One time I text him at 8PM and freaked out after because I didn't realise it was that late, and thought he'd think it was inappropriate. He didn't mention it, but I've always made sure to text during 9-5, because I feel like when he's not working, he's exactly that; not working. I don't think it's right to text him when he's sitting with his family at night, I personally would feel weird doing that. But of course everyone is different. |
