I am not religious but some times- and esp when younger- I wanted to die to find the answers.... not sure if that is close relation to your wanting to be with god.

but ya know- with religion I thought, you will be with God when the time is right, right?

Particularly if you are sincerely religious, you have an obligation to stay here and make the best of it. Life is a magnificent gift, and self-termination is considered by many people to be wrong.

Yes, many of us, including myself, have such thoughts and desires from time to time. But there's a big difference between such thoughts and desires on the one hand and acting on them on the other.

Don't act on them. That's not good for anyone concerned. Explore them with a trained T. Find out from T how to undo them. Reconcile yourself with the wonders of life here on earth. And keep in mind that we're only here for a very short time, however long we try to survive.

Heaven's a lovely place. You'll be glad when you get there. But if you try to get there before it's your time, the results won't be happy. Sorry, but that's the truth.

Try to make the best of it down here. There are many people who can help you do that. Take advantage of them. And take care.

RunningEagle, I've often thought that, but the thing to remember is that death is eternal, and this life is where we can work to serve Him. He's put you here for a reason, and even if all you can offer him at the end of the day is your suffering and endurance, that's prize enough, isn't it?

Elan, for a moment I thought you said that an afterlife was heresy! I love your quote, by the way. God wrote all the best books too. I actuallythink that is what the written word was invented for, the preservation of scriptures. That's why so many religions have written scriptures.

Well yes, this is right, we do not know for certain that our questions are going to be answered after we die. All the more reason to live a full life and be willing to accept the fact that each of us are going to spend our lives learning.

We can read the first chapter to a book, then turn to the last chapter and see an ending, but that is not the story, the story stretches from the beginning to the end.

Make a conscious decision to learn. Life is not as long as we think, none of us can determine the length of our lives. So try to take time to look around, and find a way to experience life, might as well learn while your here, after all, as human beings, that is what we are all designed to do.

That is exactly what the depression told me. I a believer for over 20 years. Medicated it isn't an issue.

This is a significant statement. It is my belief that the thoughts of self anger, sense of a desire to "not" survive as we are so designed to do, is a clear signal that somehow we know something is wrong, impeding self progress.

By design we are given these feelings of failure, even self punishing thoughts, to aide in our decision to ask "why" and have an extreme desire to find answers to our questions. There is also a very fine line in that we are also designed to recognize that we may be losing that fight for survival, for example if we are attacked by a bear and at some point we recognize that the bear is truely going to win the battle. I think all living things have this sense.

But we must also realize that we are also given a very strong sense of survival, for example there have been many stories of those who, by sheer will, survived events that brought them to a serious line of losing thier life.

When we ask questions like the one that is being asked here, it is very important to understand that this question means "we need to truely find answers for survival and vow to find answers".

I sometimes felt that way until I read Edna St. Vincent Millay's poem, "The Suicide":

Good point Inedible

I talked to a psychic at a fair once and told her i want to understand what God is. She smiled soft and said, "that is like a fish swimming saying 'what is water?'"

I'll never forget that.

I often had these thoughts, before my depression was bad I just wanted to be raptured, and I did get seriously suicidal at one point, and I was struck that I was here for a reason and I just need to survive the depression long enough to find that reason and then I will want to live to complete that reason. Most of my problems though are just lack of energy and overwhelmingness that makes living life scary and hard.

I needed to know this today. It is dark where I swim. Thanks BlueInanna.

Wishing all of us peace.

I think the hardest part is in knowing that we truly know nothing at all. We are not certain by any stretch of the imagination. We long for the comfort of God but the getting there is the hardest struggle we face.

In death there may be silence or there may be illumination...I am not certain.
