Do you think modern psychiatry is anti-spirituality/anti-religious?

Personally, I wouldn't say modern psychiatry is anti-spirituality / anti-religious. I would just say that spirituality & religion are simply not relevant to what modern psychiatry does... which is basically dole out medications.

I would say that psychiatry has a very specific purpose, and that it has the ability to realign you with your spirit. But some psychiatrists tend to focus more on the science of illness and getting better rather than the whole person, yeah. That can seem kind of anti-spiritual, I suppose.

I don't think they're anti-religious or anti-spiritual. Most pdocs don't discuss these things unless a patient brings it up, because people don't like doctors to assume they're of a certain religion (or religious at all) when they're not. A lot of people think if you're not talking about religion, you're anti-religion, when in fact it's showing respect to all, instead of just some.

my pulmonologist said it best:" i pity psychiatrists, because they know the least about their specialty and have the fewest tools to treat it."

the good ones must be witch-doctors, cause the bad ones are demonic.

I wouldn't say they're intentionally anti-spirituality/anti-religious. But unintentionally ... ? Absolutely. I think it just comes with the territory.

Though, I have heard of psychiatrists & therapists who are very open to spirituality/religion... for better, or for worse ...

I still haven't figured out what Psychiatry is after 27 yrs and I don't think Psychiatrists have either. I haven't met any Psychiatrist who does "Psychotherapy". Most Psychiatrists hate or are tired of their jobs. They are certainly not interested in prying into your life to analyze your patterns, relationships, etc. so they can diagnose and treat you properly. Seems to me that's one of the best ways to find a correct diagnosis.

I asked my present Doc what meds have worked for him and he told me, "All have worked for me and all haven't worked". I think that sums up the state of Psychiatry pretty well.

I read somewhere in all my years that Psychiatrists have the highest rate of suicide and then dentists. I even knew one of them that actually did kill themselves.

I would say, "Yes." I think that the whole concept that if someone is depressed it must be a chemical imbalance of the brain is anti-spiritual.

I have been very depressed all my life, but I don't think there is anything wrong with my brain. The one thing that stands out most for me is that I started off having a lot of religious faith . . . and then I lost it.
