In a word, no. Question

A denomination is a branch off the main trunk, like in Christian. The title "Christian" holds many denominations like Roman Catholic, Protestant and then Protestant has more branches like Methodist, Baptist, 2 divisions of Church of Christ, Lutheran, Episcopalian, etc.

Religion is the practice of beliefs of either/or the main trunk of the tree and the differences between the denominations.

I'm not sure, but I would say tha Islam also has different "denominations" or factions. Some believe they should kill the "infidel," those that don't believe in Islam and those that don't believe they should go out and kill everyone that isn't of that faith.

Anyone that knows whether I'm right or not can correct me. Just don't bite my head off! LOL

It can be. If you're Presbyterian, that can be your religion (but as the others say, that's also a denomination of Protestant Christianity). In the hospital or on forms when they ask your "religion" some people answer "Protestant" or "Catholic" and others answer "Baptist" or "Methodist," etc.

"Religion" can mean belief concerning the supernatural or it can be the institution to express that belief. It depends on with which "name" you personally wish to identify. Heck, your "religion" can be "mlyn" if you want :-)

Islam has Shiites and Sunnis; they're the two main groups fighting each other over in Iraq at the moment. The difference has to do with who are the "real" descendants of Mohammed. Everyone was happily agreeing but then technicalities arose and you get weird sects arising like Twelver Shiites who argue about the 12th successor/descendant "inman" only, think he's still "alive" and going to come back.

Just adding to what every one else has confirmed...

Religion....... is a commitment or devotion to ones faith, like a series of values that hold firm to a certain system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices (that which one lives and believes in based on their own particular church denomination).

Denomination....... is the name given by the series of values that your church holds true - such as: a Christian, a Catholic, a Presbyterian, a Mormon, a Methodist, etc...
