I am on 30 mg of abilify and 150 mg of Effexor XR. Sometimes I get hypomanic and I want to drink alcohol to settle down. I have a year and 4 months sober, but wanted to drink the other day. Does anyone else every do this? I'm going in Monday to talk with the Dr. about adding something to the mix. I'm scared to death I'm going to start drinking again! Maybe Latuda, does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you, Tanja

hi tanja
long ago before I got on meds, I drank a lot...to the black out state...just to make it all go away.....I finally got sober for over 13 years.....I am now successfully medicated and never have the urge to drink. my meds work great. I drink now and then, one or two, never to excess, those days are long gone. I realize I wasn't an alcoholic. it was the mental illness and self medicating that drove the urge to drink. I wouldn't recommend it for you so fresh in your sobriety. as I said, I had 13 years sober and stability behind me before I drank again. definitely talk to pdoc. with all the meds out there and some patience you can find the right mix to get you stable to. good luck.

Topamax literally erased my urge to drink! I don't know if that is a side effect or it was just a function of the med mixed with my own brain chemistry, but I never had the urge while I was on it.

the only addiction i have is tobbacco. I only allow myself the equal of 4 shots a week at most if i drink at all.. I used to party alot, that all stopped when my problems started, im also diabetic thanks to my symptoms and mental health courts forcing/ turning me to coffee with sugar so i have to be careful, im thinking of quitting smoking soon, but dont have the discipline right now. life was better when i was working and using cannabis regularly and barely drinking.

I smoke too. It's a great anti-psychotic for me. All my counselor and psychiatrist want me to stop but last time I did that I got so paranoid. I was actually BETTER while on it. When I don't smoke I get super paranoid.

How is Latuda? How do you like it? What is your dosage? I don't know anything about it except it's new to me. Thanks. Tanja

I've been on 40 mg for over a year, after trying about 20 medications in 5 years. There are still symptoms but nothing I can't handle. I can't take a higher dosage because I have stage 3 chronic kidney disease

Pardon me but AA doesn't work for addicts...

May I suggest NA b/c some of us are are in need about talking about our drug abuse and that is FROWNED upon in AA meetings... trust me I've been to both and have never felt closer to recovering addicts than in an NA meeting. Many of us in NA have often thought from an addicts eyes what a strange lot you alcoholics are. No offense meant. Know there is NA for all of you that suffer from addiction. I used to go every day to a meeting early in my sobriety, but now I try and get in one or two meetings a week.

AA not working for you? Know you can try an NA meeting. Same 12 step program but at least you are allowed to talk about your addiction and drug of choice to abuse. I felt rejected at AA meetings so I found a new home in NA.
