well i was on geodon with a good amount of success, then developed Tardive dyskinesia....meds were halved then cogentin were given and that seemed to do the trick. Was then taken off cogentin and was fine for a long time, about a year. Then the TD came back and doc switched me to latuda, within a few weeks of the TD from the geodon disappearing, I got new symptoms. My left arm slouches, its difficult to chew, difficult to talk in long conversations. I have weird movements with my arm in the morning. Now its Tardive Dystonia.
I have seen a neurologist movement specialist, who says I should stay on the current treatment and take muscle relaxers to ease the symptoms. He even mentioned coming off the antipsychotics. My psych has mentioned clozapine....given in dosages of one week supply and blood tests every week. That really doesn't appeal to me. Wish I could get the opinion of an expert for my situation. Anyone have any suggestions? |

Have you tried vitamin E? I used it successfully about 8 years ago for TD, but I used a stupidly high dose, one I wouldn't dare now.

i had the same problem, they mixed latuda with risperdal and my neck started twitching violently. It is now permanently stuck to the right and my left arm is slowly crippling. im now on clozapine, and went down from 300mg to 200 because of blood pressure issues. im also diabetic and smoke alot so those could be factors. But clozapine got rid of the crazy stuff nearly drove me insane.

I have Tardive Dyskinesia as a results of various psych drugs, and also some movements associated with Tardive Dystonia.
Since the drugs have really helped your psychiatric symptoms, it is a shame you may have to stop them. However stopping the drugs is the best chance of the TD or TDy resolving completely. Once established there is no cure (a small percentage remit spontaneously) but there are drugs that can help the symptoms. Clozapine is recommended as it is the least likely antipsychotic to cause or worsen TD. Quetiapine is the next best in this respect. However all these drugs have many health risks associated with them, especially in the long term, that you need to consider. Often on another Antipsychotic the symptoms are masked and do not reappear until/unless the TD reaches a much worse stage. So if it is felt you need to stay on an antipsychotic drug, that is seen as the best option. I found this article (you have to pay a small fee to download it): Tardive movement disorders: a practical approach -- Saifee and Edwards 11 (6): 341 -- Practical Neurology It gives a good overview of Tardive movement disorders and a treatment map of what to try in which order . There are other things that have been tried, like ginkgo biloba which showed some hope. And B vitamins. You can research these. It may be worth trying to track down a neurologist/movement disorder specialist with a particular interest in Tardive movement disorders, to get the best advice. I have schizoaffective disorder and came off psych drugs. But they weren't helping very much and I suffer very badly from side effects. I am very depressed all the time and have psychosis off and on. If there were a drug that would help me and not harm me, I would take it. Wish you good luck.

Have you tried Abilify? It and Latuda do basically the same thing. I couldn't take Abilify, so my pdoc switched me to Latuda. Maybe you could switch the other way?

I have TD caused by Risperidone and take a drug called tetrabenyzene to counteract it. The TD causes me uncontrollable chewing movements of the jaw and tongue, and jerky movements of my left foot. Yesterday my doctor told me I will have to take the med for the rest of my life.
Luckily I am able to get by without antipsychotics now, and take Lithium, which is a mood stabiliser. It also has worrying side affects!

Abilify made me gain 70lbs so I was taken off it.
I'm prescribed Latuda now but it makes me feel dull and empty like there's no point to anything (so I don't take it) |

I read of scholastic article or a scientific article about tardive dyskinesia that's been caused by Geodon being reversible by using Abilify.
Let me see if I can find the link
