I was just diagnosed as having schizoaffective disorder. I was wondering if anyone else suffered from this disorder.

Yeah I was first dx. with schizoaffective by my first pdoc.
But since I have been seeing my second psychiatrist he made a diagnostic change to schizophrenia.
He says he has not seen any evidence of any mood disorder.

I use to explain my first dx. to friends sarcastically as schizoaffetive means you got the best of two worlds:
both mood component and psychosis.

I am also a mental health survivor with schizoaffective disorder as well as major depression. I was finally diagnosed as having schizoaffective disorder in 1995 after years of 'it's just depression'...

I have had to really work hard to get to the decent level of functioning I am at now..two years ago I was a wreck, physically and mentally. I was so bad at caring for myself, I had to spend four months in a nursing home getting my act together because my mental-health housing support staff felt I needed some time to get my issues,health-wise, under control. Now I am getting ready to go to a two-year community college in January to pursue an associate's degree in psychology to become a peer counselor. I no longer take ANYTHING in my life for granted. Yes I still have to work at my recovery, but it's all worth it...I will be the first in my immediate family to go to college. And no one expected me to finish high school (Pitman(NJ) High School class of 1980 proud to say that!)..and now I'm going to college. Schizoaffective Disorder

Hey Kimthecatlover,
That's great that you are aiming to help other mental health survivors by becoming a peer support counsellor.Intrestingly enough that exactly my ambition as well.I am currently trying to get a placement with an ACT team at a local hospital, and so I have been told that should I get it there's a good chance they would likely hire me on afterwards. And so I pray that that's what'll happen.

I think it's great that you know what you want and that your heading back to college!!!Good luck.
